Nice deep color, with some toning peeking through! Hard to capture in the pictures, but I love the look in hand.
I like it (but it's easier to photograph outside the tomb - just sayin'). This is a coin I need to get (along with a zillion others).
Since I am still so new to ancients, and since the first raw ancient I bought was a fake, I am sticking to graded for now. And they fit better in my collection graded anyways I agree about the pictures though!
Like we've said before, to each his/her own. I just like to be able to handle my coins. The RR coin I got a few days ago was entombed like this. I was able to wedge it open without destroying the plastic. If I wanted, I could put it back in it's tomb. Nah! I like giving it some air to breath.
'J' That's a very SWEET silver h-drachm!!!! My modest bronze type may be from Caria, I'd have to look it up---my photos are listed by other 'attributes' and these inexpensive bronzes are become a bit unorganized
It's from Side in Pamphylia. The little pomegranate on the reverse gives it away even if you can't decipher the legend (which reads ΣΙΔΗΤΩΝ). However, recognizing that thing as a pomegranate requires having seen Side's numismatic pomegranates before .
Please forgive old fogies like Bing and I who predate the invention of slabs. I got a great chuckle out of your statement that you love the look 'in hand' when that is exactly why we actually like to lay hands on the coins. Perhaps we need a new term for the situation when a coin looks better when enclosed in plastic than it does when that plastic is photographed. I do not claim to be able to photograph a coin in a slab since I have only owned one. I do think that one photo 'came out' rather well though. I wonder how much of this is artistic license and how much is the fact that most domesticated plants and animals have changed a lot in 2000 years. Does this image show an accurate view of a pomegranate 'then'? Look at some of the horses on coins. Few look like something that runs in the Kentucky Derby or pulls wagons of Budweiser.
Ahaha funny, because I was quickly scrolling-down to make an "in hand" comment, but Mentor beat me to it (damn him!!) ... anyway, we've already chased-off a few too many slab collectors, so I should probably be careful not to be too critical, eh? jwitten => amazingly cool coin (congrats on that sweet addition ... oh, and even though it is in a plastic case, I can see that it is a real winner!!) cheers, coin-bro Curious? ... does it actually have that cool iridescent toning? (very nice)
Yes, it has that blue toning to it, and that was hard to capture in the slab. I am still keeping it there though
Lovely coin. But, like others here, I hate slabs. I like to be able to put my coins in an album in chronological order. (I also hate the ridiculous Sheldon grading system where coins get given a mark out of 70, but that's neither here nor there )
I think we chased off a few members earlier in the year by harping on the slab thing, members that had valuable contributions to the forum. I'm not one to tell other people what they should say, but it's something to think about.
I absolutely prefer 'raw' but have no problem with other preferences......Hey, this is a hobby----we all have different ideas about how and what to collect and the best way to present what we have----- and that's perfectly OK with me.
Why? We all like to look at other's coins regardless of how we choose to store them. Mikey said it. It's your coin and your decision, but please don't stop showing your acquisitions, slabbed or not.
I am not that easily offended, I will keep showing! haha. I am about to head to the post office.. I hope my newest one is here!
