I got this at SD Coinarama yesterday. Will send it out to be slabbed. Most likely ANACs due to cost.

    It's a beautiful coin. I hope it's authentic.

    !!!???
Assuming you paid somewhere near book value, why would you try to save a few bucks by choosing ANACS over NGC or PCGS?
That's the sort of coin I'd want evaluated by the best TPG. IMO that's not ANACS.

But whatever, I hope it works out well for you.

That was my thought. A nice looking small eagle dollar sent to ANACS due to cost? Isn't that a several thousand dollar coin? What's $15 in difference between the companies?

I think it's definitely worth spending the little extra money on one of the top tier companies... you'll be glad you spent a little more when it comes time to sell it. That coin in an ANACS holder versus a PCGS/NGC holder could potentially mean several hundred dollars or more when it comes time to sell. People tend to discount ANACS holders these days no matter what the coin looks like.

That is a nice looking coin. But I get where he is going guys. I too will spend a fortune on my coins then begrudge the grading fee of the other TPGs.

I think the coin will speak for itself no matter the holder it is in. I think this coin is nice looking, but will probably return in a details slab. I probably would have picked NGC, but I do understand about grading fees. Nice pickup.

keep us updated how it grades!
the grade will speak for its self not the holder.
    Anacs is a good TPG.
    I use them often

The certification is to verify it's authenticity. I planned on cracking it out as it is going in a Type Set album. However, I am rethinking that and may just put in a picture of the coin.

Yes, it could mean several hundred dollars and/or several weeks or months of time.

    Yes, that is true.

Sadly, it means they are "buying the slab, not the coin". There are many perfectly wonderful coins in ANACS slabs which can (and do) cross to PCGS at par. Shopping ANACS and ICG slabs is a good way to get a good coin at a good price.

But be careful... there's a reason why ANACS and ICG have lesser reputations. Collector, grade for thyself !

My local dealer submits through PCGS in sufficient quantities to get a sizable discount on grading fees and allows me to piggy back on his submissions from time to time. I don't see a problem with crossing over to PCGS from ANACS.
Just submitted to PCGS via my dealer 7/26
My other concern is that, like most old dollars, it may get graded as having been cleaned. With PCGS, you only get an "Authentic" listing, no net grading.
For that matter, from the pictures, what would you CTers grade it?

If the pictures are accurate I don't think it'll go in a no problem holder. It looks to have been fixed. Probably cleaned and then retoned.

Looks like an XF-40. I had one in a PCGS VF-30 holder, and yours has a bit more detail on the central portrait/eagle design. The wreath looks nice and sharp also. Hard to judge regarding cleaning by the pics. Good luck!

    The Results

My thoughts were VF-30 to VF-35.

Now for the sad news. It came back from PCGS body bagged as "Questionable Authenticity". My guess is that it is an excellent Chinese counterfeit.

Fortunately, the response from the dealer I bought it was : Wow - I'm embarassed! Of course I will make good on the coin, including your grading costs. Sorry for the trouble. Please see me at my Long Beach table.

After Long Beach, I'll post how the return went and what I will have gotten to replace this coin.

Wow, sad news indeed. Makes me happy I bought my US stuff years ago if this is the quality of the Chinese counterfeits and they are in dealers hands now. Scary stuff indeed. Sorry about it, at least you bought from a good dealer and have recourse.
