Hi guys. My name is Garland. I started roll hunting the week before last and have some questions to ask. I started this not realizing how popular this was and didn't know of forums out there til a week afterwards. Im searching everyday and my approach has changed a couple of times already. I hope I dont sound naive but Im seriously wondering about this. I've just ran into bank #4 in my area and the rolls are all plastic wrapped. No customer rolls. They said they really only get them during the holidays. I bought $150 worth of dimes and edge scanned. I HATE these plastic wraps. No Silver out of 30 rolls. Whats the most logical and convenient approach to going through the rest of what the bank has on hand. Two tellers that are both young women who dont seem like the coin collecting type but you never know. Small town, bank seemed dead even at 4:00pm.
The other three banks Ive had paper wraps and have looked at each dime out of probably $500 worth and have had no issue but im hesitant to unroll all of these especially since the element of surprise is gone, but at the same time im dying to know if there is any silver to be found in whatever the left at this bank. Bug has bit me kind of hard and I dont work in the winter so ive got the itch and the time. Any help appreciated.
Welcome to CT. go to other banks. there are many roll searchers here that could give way better advice than me. keep searching. ask for customer rapped rolls too.
I take the "you get what you get" approach. Especially when I don't have accounts at the banks I am asking for coins. If they are willing to give me coins to search I take them with a smile and a "Thank you". You're survey sample is pretty low so far too, so don't get discouraged if you aren't finding silver all the time. Last year I averaged 1 dime out of $327 (135 dimes found out of $44,175 searched). So far this year I am doing better with 1 found per $189 searched (37 found out of $7,000 searched).
First, welcome to the neighborhood! If all you are doing is looking for silver, you may be short-changing yourself. There are many varieties available for different denominations that are worth more than their silver value. Chris
I had a huge post typed earlier and I wasn't logged in so it said pending til login. Immediately logged in to find it had disappeared. Anyways. Ive searchIveclose to 500 in dimes and ended up with a 57, mint 51, beat up 42 mercury and a 94 silver proof that I traded to pops for a 55. Last bank I went to had $300 in dimes. Lady asked why, told her I just started collecting with my son and She gave me $150 customer where I found the merc. Came back and she asked if I had any luck. She was really sweet so I told her. Asked how much trouble it'd be to get the rest and she offered a straight trade for the previous 150 for the remaining 150. All but 4 rolls were customer wrapped. That's where I found the 57 and the proof. So I was wondering about asking the other bank in the morning about trading the dimes back for other rolls after I explained what I was doing. Curiosity got the best of me at three banks so far and I've asked if anyone ever asked to purchase coins. 2/3 so far said from time to time that people would ask for halves but they were few and rare. One teller at another bank told me to stick to customer wrapped and avoid their loomis rolls as soon as I asked to purchase coins. I was a member for 6 years and were familiar with one another. I asked how she knew and she said years of experience. I'm in the Atlanta reserve district. Any backup on that?
I have 6 banks in a 4 mile radius all ten minutes from my house. I've bought from 4 and dump at one. Number 6 doesn't keep customer rolls. They dump from a coin counter to a bag. I asked teller about buying the bag and she said they were alerted when full, sealed, and picked up by feds. I think she thought I meant at its unfilled status. Any tips on asking bank manager about taking them off her hands when they're full? Tellers dump them. Counter is not for public use. I did ask if it rejected old or foreign coins and she said it eats anything unless it's mashed flat or bent. She's young and new. I'm judging the book by the cover though so who knows. Not gonna lie guys, this bug bites HARD
Welcome to the crazy train, Intense. My approach may differ form others in that I don't generally go through entire boxes at a time because of my schedule. I do try to do at least a box of cents every week, but other than that I have a number of local and "chain" banks that are generally willing to let me buy "small" quantities of rolls ($20-30 worth) without any hassle. I try to hit up a different bank every couple of days in my travels. It's given me a chance to build a relationship with many tellers, some of whom keep an eye out for "strange" coins and bills and hold them for me.
