It depends on the date, but they are worth at least $30 due to the age of the coins

also my friends go to the bank and get rolls of dimes looking for silver. what are the odds of finding silver dimes?

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

Check the cents for dates such as
    anything pre-1919, any 1909vdb or S-vdb, 1910-s 1911-s 1913-s 1914-D (biggie) 1922 and 1922(no 'D') 1924-D and any 1931-1933

just a few dates off the top of my head.

Try Craigslist, or volunteering at a retirement home;)

Let your family know you collect coins, I figured a lot of my family hoards silver and doesn't know the value.
Put an ad on craigslist for wanted silver, but first, what state do you live in?

Practice, practice, practice, I would start by looking in the US coins section of the forum for those pesky "Guess the Grade" polls and try to get them right, and then read up on how to grade by googling how to grade the specific coin, pull a bunch out, and start grading, while making note of date, Mintmark, and any scratches (Scratches bumps grade down) or damage (also lowers the grade)

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

If you want to learn more about grading, you might want to purchase one of the books on grading such as American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins published by Whitman. If you do decide to get this book, I'd recommend the spiral-bound edition.

There is so much to learn about numismatics, and you will never stop learning. Before you jump in and start buying, I urge you to proceed slowly so you don't waste your money. If you see something that interests you, you can always ask questions here. There will always be someone willing to help and give you guidance.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

The age of a coin has about as much effect on the value of a coin as what you ate for breakfast!
