Welcome to Coin Talk. I don't know where you looked but PoliceAuctions.com is a legitimate site based in Costa Mesa, Calif.. Support number is 714 area code which is Ca. I'm not promoting their site but I have looked on it in the past. Always found the prices too high. Never bought anything from them. They do state they are not affiliated with any Federal, State, or Local Gov't.

Yes. It's Donna. Appears Donna was taken so I dropped the "o". And the Red Book is great. Takes the confusion out of a lot of internet contradictions. I am Fo Sho going to slow down. I got a little to excited without enough knowledge to back me up. ugh. I need to stay of the internet and come here.

Yes. I did win that auction for that coin. But after reading the reviews, not a single one that was good.. I'm hesitant to pay. I feel obligated. But I read SCAM more times than I can count. I don't feel obligated to pay someone that is scamming me. On the other hand I should have read the reviews first. I've never not paid for something I bid on. But I won't be a sucker. Not sure what the consequences are for not paying but if it means my membership is revoked. Bring it on. I guess I'll find out.

If by issue you mean coin (sorry still learning coin talk jargon) yes.
    A 1938 wheat penny. Reasons:
My Dad was born in 38
He loved and collected wheat pennies
And when I was a child he would scold me if I passed a penny on the ground without picking it up. he was very poor growing up and told me to quit acting like picking up a penny was beneath me. I miss him and I never pass a penny up because of those memories. One in mint condition would thrill me and I would keep it for ever. I would even treasure a beat up one. I could write a book about how awesome my Dad was. Because my Dad had NOTHING growing up, he made sure his family had everything we needed.

Lincoln cents, especially wheat cents, are super popular to collect. That might just be a good one to start with. I don’t really collect them myself, so hopefully one of our experts will chime in on such topics as difficult dates.

I think that's a terrific place to start. Personal connections are a great way to focus your collecting interests.

Right now on Ebay you can buy a 1938 Lincoln graded MS-64 Red by PCGS for $13. And that's from a "buy it now" seller. You could probably get it for even less if you want to work the auction or "make offer" sellers.

A 38 wheatie in a slab would make a nice little memento of your dad. You can find 1938 Mercury dimes and Jefferson nickels in similar price ranges as well.

1938 is a cool year for nickels since the government put out both Buffalo and Jefferson nickels. A Buffalo doesn’t have to chew up your wallet, either.

I floated about on eBay and found some affordable Washington quarters for ‘38 in grading holders. The bigger ticket item for that year is the Walking Liberty half.

A date set of your father’s birth year may be a cool place to start. Six coins in total.

I'll second that motion. And if the collecting bug doesn't hold for the long haul, @Dnna would still have a set of coins that would always hold special meaning for her.

I really like that idea. In fact I think I have a 1938 walking liberty (not sure though) seems they were all older dates. I'll have to unpack them again.

Yes. I Love these suggestions. My father passed away a year ago tomorrow. So I'm feeling sniffy and motivated to do this. I'm headed to eBay. Thanks. I wouldn't have thought of these things without you
coin-noiseurs. See what I did there. Lol. I know... lame.

When your dad and I were young 13 of those pennies would get you into a movie. 19 pennies would get you a gallon of gas. A few for a loaf of bread or quart of milk. I am retired and have a substantial retirement fund and I still stoop down to pick up a penny, or any other change.

Same here...I always pick up coins I find on the ground, even though I know they will be damaged. I have found a few that weren’t...tires hadn’t found them yet.

My best find was in Salina, Kansas on 24 August, this year...about 40 coins all denoms on the ground in a IHOP parking lot...$4 or so...fresh spill...no tires over them yet...Spark

If you won the coin through eBay, you have options. Return items as, "Not as described." If you didn't pay too much and it is a fake coin, it would be nice to have and compare to others.
