My apologies if this thread resides elsewhere on the board (I haven't come across it), but I was curious as to what New York City coin shows the group would recommend attending? I'd love some insight from the board. I've never attended a coin show before, but would like to.
Im from nyc Susan! Ive been to 1 this year. It was mostly an ancient coin show. I did find a few cheap morgans and a few great hobo nickels. I bought the hobo nickels for 5 bucks a pop and each one sold for over $50!!! I knew and still know nothing about ancients, but the show was still awesome. Are you going to chicago next month for the worlds money fair? I went last year to boston and it was well worth the trip. I want to go again this year and Im scrounching for the cash still. Its great having the chance to buy world mint sets straight from the source and wiping out the loupe to cherrypick the nicest ones! They also have a lot of limited edition world sets sold only at the show!
I don't plan on traveling out of town for any shows at this point. While I mostly stock up on bullion, I have a strong desire to check out a show and perhaps purchase a coin or two that appeals to me. Being from NYC, I'd like to think that I would be able to find a good show w/o having to head out of town!
There is a regular show in Staten Island. The only big show is in January, in Manhattan, and is mainly foreign & ancient stuff. There is a bi-monthly show in Melville, Long Island.
You could take the train to Philly. The Whittman show is in early Sept. That should be easy for you to get to.
There is a mid-sized monthly coin show in Parsipanny, New Jersey. New York City proper doesn't attract many shows because the cost of hall rental, and security tend to be higher. For multi-day shows, the higher cost of lodging and meals would be more negatives for participating dealers.
I've been to Parsipanny, Melville & Wespnex (in Westchester). Any of them would work for a "smaller" type show. None of them have the advantages of the big shows (although Wespnex is the best of the three).
The Philly show is a good one Susan and I'd recommend you go to it if you can. It's a big show with lots of dealers and great selection for any taste in coins. The Westchester show is pretty good too although I haven't been to it in a few years. Have fun. Bruce
Ill be going to the next one in philly! You can take megabus there on the cheap. You can also hit up the mint and buy a few commemoratives and cherry pick for ms70's.
Howard's right, the U.S. Mint is only about ten blocks from the convention center. A nice walk if the weather is nice. Bruce
Parsippany??? LOL. How sad is it that someone in Manhattan has to go to Parsippany for a coin show? Makes me think this hobby operates on food stamps.
