Anybody have experience buying from New World Rarities ? I bought my first commemoratives from them, and one of them has a bad film and what looks to be fingerprints all over its otherwise spectacular, proof ASE-like, finish. I read the Conditions of Sale, and it describes terms for 1) certified coins, and 2) “bullion items”. My coins aren’t certified, so I guess they’re lumping everything else into bullion items. The bullion items terms are “All sales final upon confirmation of trade.” I called their phone number to ask for clarification, and the answering machine options are 1) to talk to someone by their extension, 2) place an order, or 3) leave a message. I opted for 3, and was told that their message bin is full. I guess my best bet will be to resell them if I’m not happy with the coins ?
Yikes – I did a search on another board for this company, and the comments I found in three threads would have convinced me to buy somewhere else. Should have done my homework first, I guess, but I’ve always been very happy with the coins purchased from other companies I’ve bought by phone or Internet. Looking at the terms on the back of the invoice some more, I see this statement: “Any oral statements made by NWR Ltd. do not take precedent over these written statements.” Meaning, “we can say anything to you over the phone and it is worthless; the only thing that counts is the terms written on the back of the invoice, which you don’t see until after your purchase arrives.”
Bacchus... When studying numismatics in the early 1980's friends who owned a coin dealership gave me some solid advice...1. Know whom it is that you are buying from. 2. Have unconditional return policy if you can not see it or hold it. Find someone (dealer) an establish a friendship for reference, advice and opportunity to get select coins by association. Sorry to hear of this deal gone bad...I will be happy to name a few highly respected dealers if you like? Good hunting.. RickieB
Thanks, RickieB, but this was a cheap lesson. I spent less than $40, including shipping, for the two coins. I especially agree with your point about ensuring an unconditional return policy.
