Anyone going to buy the new 2008 Buffalo Celebration Gold coin that the mint posted today, and is available on 2/5/08? Is it Proof or UNC?I think it's UNC. Also no product limit. Interesting.....

Besides its packaging, how is this any different than a normal gold American Buffalo coin? Or is that the only difference?

How does anything about the design celebrate the Lunar New Year, which it claims to? Again, besides the packaging?

And what exactly is a "non-traditional coin collector" lol?

I'm sure it's a nice coin and all, but it seems this "celebration series" is nothing more than a new way of marketing something that they were already going to make anyway lol... if they want this thing to celebrate given holidays or celebrations, such as in this case Lunar New Year, why don't they change the design of the actual coin, and not just put it in a different looking box?

    8 in the design =celebration

its an idea borrowed from the BEP who celebrate it every year - non traditonal collector people who otherwise would not buy this coin

So it is just like a 2007 gold buffalo, except for having the 2008 date right? And in a pretty red box?

Nice coin and all but hardly seems something to "celebrate" about.

you would be surprised i expect a sell out if the BEP is an indication on their celebration notes

Actually I wouldn't especially since this coin is being marketed to "non-traditional" (i.e., not very knowledgeable) coin collectors lol...

My point is if you took this coin out of its packaging it is indistinguishable from any other 2008 gold buffalo. The fact that it's put in a different colored box and marketed diffrently doesn't make the coin any different. I guess I'm just to much of a "traditional" coin collector to buy into that lol...

I think we need to add another maxim to this site... "buy the coin, not the packaging."

from a coin collecting viewpoint yes but the non traditional collectors want the red box its a sign of prosperity

Yep, I'm sure anyone who can convince people to pay a premium for a red box must be very prosperous lol...

Hmm... I should try to sell coins on eBay that way, see if I can get extra if I promise to include a red box with my coins.

Lunar New Year is February 7 btw. Happy Year of the Rat!

Troodon if you manage to tie your coins with the lunar year and a red box and package it well you wont need collectors to buy those coins ;) and people who are looking for luck and prosperity dont really care about grade they care about metal and the design :)

The Mint said in their press release that there would be no mint limits set for this coin.

I will just wait on this one and see what happens..... as long as the mint doesnt put a limit on this coin. :D

In summary, this is what the February 5th. Buffalo is, I think:

    - Mintage year: 2008
    - Not a proof coin
    - Not Unc coin(burnished blanks)
    - Minted at West Point but without the mint mark
    - Can buy this exact coin from the US Mint distributors in 2008
    - Includes mint packaging with COA
    - Price $1018.88

If the above is true, IMO, nothing is special about this coin

Based on the picture, it looks like the coin isn't even in the standard plastic capsule almost all other modern Mint products come in...

Again, I just don't get the point... nothing special but the box, and the coin doesn't even come with its usual protections. Also looks uncirculated and not proof. I just don't see how any premium over what this coin would otherwise sell for is justified, at least not from a numismatic standpoint. Perhaps those "non-tradional coin collectors" will feel otherwise...

Anyway enough beating of a dead horse for me lol...
