I collected coins and paper money from 1999 until around 2002. I collected quite a bit, bet being in school made it so I could not afford much. In that time span, I put together a 30 years proof set run, all of the ASE's and got a 1/4 ounce Gold American eagle (98). I also started binders of all demoninations, and got pretty good selection going. I have decided to *kind of* get back into collecting sence I found this forum. So here is my plan to what I have thought up, to be able to grow my collection..

    1) I live in Las Vegas, and have read a lot about people surching rolls of halves. The Franklin is my favorite coin, and I like JFK's too. Do the large casinos here in vegas have rolls that I can buy from them? Would they be worth the time to go through?

    2) To keep it affordable, I have decided that I will only use the coins I find in circulation to trade or sell to upgrade my collection. I also have a pretty large selection of doubles that I can start selling/ traiding now.

    3) Where is the best place to trade and sell? I am an ebay veteren, but with the listing fees/paypal fess I will loose to much money.

    Thanks in advance!

If you're going to collect strictly through circulating coins, I'm affraid thats a hit or miss proposition, at best. Casinos don't have rolls of silver, or clad halves anymore. Quarters are the largest coin denomination they keep, as anything larger is in token form. I always visit Sahara Coins on West Sahara. If you like common silver they sell a lot of it for bullion price, plus they're always happy to buy your old silver and sometimes trade. Best.

Welcome! Also, welcome back to the hobby.

1)Casinos will sometimes have rolls of halves, but also your local banks might too. But, they just don't hand out silver rolls, gotta search for them. And that can get tough sometimes. People that have found rolls and rolls of silver, probably have searched rolls and rolls to find them. Also, roll searching is like a slot machine. Never know what it is really going to dish out. Sometimes you might get lucky, sometimes you might not.

    2) This can get pretty tough, but it is possible to get some real nice coins from circulation. I would also look into buying some coins though too, widen your field a little bit. Don't have to spend a lot of money though to have fun. :thumb:

    3) Bunches of places to buy/sell/trade. Including here. Once you get more than ten posts, you can list want lists and all in the open forum part of here. You can list what you want, and what you are either willing to pay or trade. Also, there is a site called www.coinbug.com. A fairly new site, but has a lot of potential. Can list up to five free items there, and can contact some sellers off of there to see if they would be willing to trade possibly too.

Hope these help a little bit. But, the best tip I can give you overall: Don't let it get unfun. :thumb: Best of luck, and have fun collecting!

welcome to the forum! :thumb:i know i guy on another forum that finds casions that have half dollar machines still. what you do is put money into the machine like a $20 bill or whatever you want to search. after it takes your bill hit the cash out button on the machine and it will give you $20 in half dollars or whatever you want to search. after you get done searching from the machines go over and trade your halves for cash and do it some more until you want to stop. also you can go into banks and ask for them or they will order you a box of $500 in halves. all you have to do is ask around! :D

Once I have searched them, Will they trade them back for cash, or will they charge me coin star style?

No, they won't charge you "coin star style". That would P*** off their customers and hurt the bottom line. An easy way to find out if a particular casino stocks halves is to check out one of their blackjack tables. If you see halves on the table (I'm not talking about the dollar tokens!), you can probably buy rolls at the cash cage. A lot of casinos use $2.50 chips however, and won't stock any significant amount of halves. Your best bet is downtown where you have a lot of low-roller clientle. eg. $3 tables.

Living in SD, I have 3 nearby casinos, of which 2 pay off with halves. I bought $50 tonight and found one 1968d 40% and two 2004.

    Good luck.

Whats special about an 04 half dollar?

Sweet, I am going to start checking them out next weekend, because I am sure its craxy because of New Years.

I just got done looking at everything I have colected, and I HAve figured a few things out.

    1) My favorite coin is the Franklin Haves.
    2) I have one Dansco Album, and I want them for all my collections. Where is a good place to buy them?
    3) I have 6 UNC rolls of state quaters (KY D, TE D, KY P, NC P, OH D, TE P) Do these hold any value?

All Halves from 2002 to the current date were only available in Mint Sets or in rolls/bags from the mint. So technically, you shouldn't find them in pocket change or bank rolls. There were only 2-4 million minted each year.

    Welcome to the forum.

I'm no expert on coins or marketing so I don't have any advice for you. I do have an observation. Even though there are fees involved there are folks succesfully selling current circulated coins on ebay. They aren't getting rich but they are definitely making a profit- especially the ones charging $3 or $4 shipping fees.

Welcome to Coin Chat! Asking questions here will get you a lot of good answers.

I think www.brooklyngallery.com has the best prices on Dansco Coin Albums, but often, a local dealer will have some good used ones at less than half price.

WELCOME HERE. Las Vegas? If you can't find great halves there, they don't exist. Get to know people that frequent gambling places. Ask them to ask at those places for any old bags, boxes, rolls of halves. Many have stopped using coins but still have stock piles of them laying around. Nothing to loose by asking.
