I recently purchased a 1880, 1887 O, and 1896 O Morgan dollars. They look amazing in detail and shine. I am trying to determine if it would be a wise decision to have them graded and by whom.
to sell or keep. not sure yet. i got them for 50 each. i dont know enough about them to know if i got a good deal. when it comes to coin grading, i understand the value range is based on condition, thats about it.. would i pay too much to have these graded vs their value?
The 87O, and the 96O and The 1880 look to me IHO looked to be cleaned AU details, but not quite rite, we'll see what the other folks say,, very good dates,, R.
Most Morgans are not worth grading unless they are A) Really Rare or B) a high grade. I'll be honest I got rid of a ton of slabs for next to nothing because the slabbed coins sat around for years. Some of them do lackluster and look a bit flat.
Call it .75 troy, each, Morgan's tend to bring a premium, these have the look of being wiped down with cloth and maybe an abrasive, 20X loop will confirm that
I don't claim to be an expert, but my advise would be to take these coins to a dealer and ask them to take a look to see what they think about the coins and if they are worth sending to PCGS or NGC for grading. Be careful if they make you an offer. You should always get a second opinion.
