Hi All, I've been looking around and I've decided that I'd like to start an ancient coin collection specifically focusing on ancient Israeli and Jewish coins. The only problem is where to begin! Can anyone give me some resources on how one goes about educating oneself on this topic? Books, videos, forums, etc.? I don't want to start buying until I have a better idea of the coins, the market, the history and any other pertinent info. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! -SP
If you want to collect these types, the book is "Guide to Biblical Coins" by David Hendin. In my opinion that's your best starting point. As far as getting to know the market the best you can do is look at selling prices on sites like cngcoins.com or ACSearch.info
A good reference is David Hendin's GUIDE TO BIBLICAL COINS. This book has gone through some 5 editions. Amazon has the current edition at $85. But I watched eBay periodically and found a 3rd edition for under $20. This VCoins site has the 4th edition for $45. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ki...iblical_coins_4th_edition/862201/Default.aspx The upshot is that a beginning collector might be able to get the basics from a slightly outdated Hendin edition and save some money on this popular resource. Signed third edition: $38.00 / Make offer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Guide-to-Bi...706200&hash=item3f7f21bcef:g:QO4AAOSw3v5YuEzC
Welcome to the Ancients Forum, Silverpicker! Several of our forum members focus on Judaean coins. Check out this website. http://www.menorahcoinproject.org. There are some excellent books available. Just Google: David Hendin books. I've purchased most of my Judaean coins from respected dealers in Israel. L. Alexander Wolfe is at the top of my list.
I'll fourth David Hendin's book! He also has auctions on ebay every so often under Amphora Coins. Welcome to da club, yo. Erin
I agree that David Hendin's book is the one. You might be able to find one on the cheap by buying an earlier edition. I found this one interesting. SYLLOGE NUMMORUM GRAECORUM FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY PART 6 PALESTINE-SOUTH ARABIA BY YA’AKOV MESHORER NEW COPY It has lots of pictures, but not a lot of verbage to help you understand coins of the area / time. You can usually buy this one at a good price. The ANS has one for $15. The only down side is it is big: 12" X 16". http://numismatics.org/store/sng6/
Hey thanks! It's the logo from my YouTube channel (youtube.com/silverpicker). That's a nice coin...what is it?
It is a peace medal I picked up recently. It commemorates negotiations that ended war between France and the Netherlands in 1677. The scales represent weighing peace vs continuing to fight. I talked about it here - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/token-jeton-with-scale.300302/ I
