My question is mostly subjective in nature, but I don't know what is "acceptable" when buying graded (PCGS) coins...

I bought a $125 PCGS coin and one of the 'edges' on the back of the slab is cracked off -- these edges go around the slab to allow one to stack the slabs...

I know how *I* feel about it, but my main question is, "is this acceptable within the ranks?" ---> Will this hurt the value? Would I be expected to disclose it should I want to sell?

(tried my best at a photo as it doesn't show up in your typical coin scans)

I would think those edges would flack off easily. It's just extra plastic hanging off the case. With that said, as long as it doesn't effect te actual structure/encapsulation capacity of the slab, I wouldn't worry about it. The main reason for the slab is to keep the coin as is and away from the elements, not so they're stackable.

You will see these all the time, and it doesn't detract from the value of the coin unless a buyer is just plain anal.

It's no big deal in my book. I've got a few pretty beaten-up slabs - my consolation is that the damage is on the holder and not the coin.

Yes you should disclose it ! That's why I love NGC Holder much durable than PCGS..

It happens. Much of the time it is no big deal. Most buyers and sellers do not care very much about these slight break away pieces. Truly, I much prefer my slabs to be pristine, but I know it does not always happen that way.

I would not be happy if a coin showed up with a cracked slab, unless the seller specifically mentioned it before purchase. That way, as a buyer I could decide if I wanted the coin bad enough to accept a damaged slab. Between fees and insurance, and time, it will cost you ~$20-30.00 to get this reslabbed, something if you knew about this ahead of time, you could price into the maximum you were willing to spend. I would also say that damaged slabs may be an indication of tampering, but probably in 99% of cases it's just damage. Still, that 1% might cause a person to look elsewhere. I feel your pain, I guess I am too anal to look past the damaged slab.

What's in that slab anyway, Kevinfred? I can't make it out...

I was just going to say about the same thing, if you like the coin enough it's a non issue.
The only people that would have an issue with it is someone that collects modern graded 70's where the coin is interchangable with thousands of others and the slab is everything.

  20. Every coin I have won from Heritage auctions came with those back flanges busted. Doesn't bother me one bit.

Don't bother me but you have people like the hobby ambassador that would throw a tantrum about, so yes if you sell it on flea bay you should mention it so you don't get a neg or neutral.
