Doesnt it take close to 18 months or so to get the new series printed and out the door? How long did it take Paulson? I dont remember excatly, but i do remember it took a while. So - maybe we will see 2010 and... maybe we will see some design changes to follow suit with the higher denoms. I know its unlikely, but its a thought. for spock ... i will fill his dream, i just need to go shopping for a new Monopoly game
I took out some cash yesterday from the bank, there are still quite a few Series 1996 notes in circulation in that particular denomination.
nah ill give you the equivalent in regular currency i just wont get any CU 2009 notes you know unless you save them and it wont be expensive only $188
i rarely get anything crisp from my banks. i think they run all new notes through a wrinkler, smudger, dirtyer, and stinker prior to releasing them to the public.
Was about to ask that... I know Geithner got confirmed yesterday, but has Obama named a treasurer yet? Anyone heard? As it's a rather minor position such a thing wouldn't likely hit the news. As far as I can tell (based on the US Treasury's website) there is no treasurer, as of yet. When the treasurer's office is vacant, the president serves as the acting treasurer (so Barack Obama is currently the acting treasurer). There won't be a new series of notes until Obama names a treasurer and he or she is confirmed; even then it will probably be 12 to 18 months before series 2009 (if there is such a series) currency shows up in circulation. It's worth noting that George W. Bush didn't name the first treasurer in his administration until August 16, 2001 (about 7 months after taking office); Clinton didn't name one until March 1, 1994 (more than a year after taking office), so it could be a while! Still, Series 1993 bills (not actually printed until 1994) still had Mary Ellen Withrow's signature on them, even though she wasn't appointed until 1994. If Obama takes that long to name one, the treasurer's signature may still be on series 2009 bills but not printed until 2010... Basically I'd expect to wait at least a year before you see new signatures on currency.
Yep, you are right. There needs to be that person confirmed as well. I really think that this will happen sooner than later since Obama wants to take charge of this plan to fix the economic condition! Who knows what will happen? Wait an see I suppose! RickieB
No nomination yet. When there is one, the first place you'll hear about it is probably either here or here, depending on whose web gremlins are quickest with the update. And, as you say, it's a pretty minor post, and it could easily take Obama months to get around to it, especially what with everything else going on.... Once we *do* get both currency signers installed in office, it typically takes the BEP about three months to make up new master plates, duplicate working plates from them, and get the first of the new-series notes through all the printing steps. And then it takes another month-ish for them to appear in circulation, and half a year or longer for them to become really common. Assuming nobody changes the rules again (I'm looking at *you*, two different 2006 $5's!), the new series will be called Series 2009 no matter how long the Treasurer delay is, because the date is based on the year the Secretary takes office.
