Just won this on ebay the other night for a good price. I haven't received it yet. Any guesses as to the grade and the price I paid? It's in the OGH, as you can see below. These are the sellers' pictures, definitely not great, but they'll have to do.

I say its a MS65 possibly a slider to MS66 I'd have to see it in person to make that call... I Think PCGS would have graded it MS65. Nice looking coin! Congrats on your purchase! I would guess price was about $50 - 55 for this little beauty?

    agree with Steve

This date is often found in very nice shape, the pics don't make this one look like 66.

How do you get a 66 with those scratch marks? What am I missing?

Unless I am missing something, the scratches (mostly on the obverse I presume, as I see a couple faint scratches there) you see are considered to relatively minor by market standards. The strike and luster on 1938-d's tends to be extraordinarily strong, and if anything it is kind of rare to see one graded anything but an ms-66.

That being said, I presume the technical grade would be lower, but regrettably, my grading standards tend to stem solely from my experience working at a grading company. I have been trying to work on this though, as I think I could benefit from understanding the difference between the two.

I may be wrong, but it seems as if technical grading always considers luster, strike, marks etc. regardless of the coin. And to me that makes more sense than market grading, which tends to evaluate each series, and sometimes even each date on an as-is basis so to speak. What might be an ms-62 for one date, might be an ms-65 for another according to "market standards". I put that in quotes, as I feel that grading companies unfortunately decide what is market acceptable more so than the actual market does. I apologize for the tangent.

Thanks for the info Zaneman, I've been curious about that for a while, as I have seen what I perceived as inconsistancy.. (ie: The Westward Journey nickels, plagued by lots of bag marks, it seemed to me that grading was looser on them than for the previous Jefferson nickels) So that explains it a bit... Thanks!

Is that a pretty bad hit just underneath the back of the mouth on the obverse? If so, it may have been bumped down to a 63. If not, it's a 65/66 coin.

    I'd say it's a 65, cost about $50.

My grade is 64. I think they probably graded it a 65 though. A very nice coin. :thumb: Beautiful luster on her to. ;) Nice coin.
