The scarce coins of Nero bearing the Temple of Janus reverse motive were struck after Nero assumed the title of Imperator in mid 66 a.d. following the peace treaty that ended Corbulos´s campaign against the Parthians and the installation of Tiridates as King of Armenia, and before the outbreak of the Jewish war in November of the same year, when the doors of the Temple of Janus were presumably opened again.

Very nice Julius Germanicus, that wouldn't have been cheap, the obverse is exceptional. I have an As, but I think 2015-01-07 01.07.50-19.jpg most would have seen it if they watched the tournament but it is such a nice coin I will post it again.

A nice portrait on that sestertius, JG. Pretty coin.

    Here is its little brother.

I really like the look of that one, JG. All I have is a budget AE As example... especially budget on the obverse.

I have always wanted a sestertius of the type but seem to be destined to have a pocket full of asses instead. There are many variations on these things but the one I like best is the as variation that shows the reverse legend as used on the sestertius PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT rather than the usual as legend PACE P R VBIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT. The smaller flan caused them to change 'on land and sea' to 'everywhere'.

There are dupondii, too, but the sestertii are really impressive. Congratulations!

WOW!! I'm still drooling after a sestertius as terrific as the OP....and none of the others I have of Nero have that reverse---or any of the rest in my collection either:(

That's a nice coin with strong detail, what I do when they are dark like that one, so you can see detail, play around with exposure settings in Windows photo's you just make a copy then your free to try adding light. Like this above. (Hope you don't mind me using your photo)

Here's my Temple of Janus aureus (RIC 50), from my oversharp photos with bad lighting phase:

OMG I need one of those! Is that a banker´s mark or the remnants of an inlay (like a Gonzaga Eagle or something) on the reverse???
    More photos please...

It's a banker's mark which looks like an Epsilon or an M. I'd say the Gonzagas would have found a less-worn coin for their collection :D

Beautiful coin, I would love one but always a bit pricey. Interesting banker's mark as I thought I had the only Nero coin with a banker's 5nARdWa2y6MgJSk4L86s9HgQm3PLNE (550x275).jpg mark until I seen yours as I thought they stopped with that in republican early imperial times...glad to see I am not alone. My Nero denarius with B/M.
