I like to store my coins in the 2x2 cardboard holders and keep them organized in the 9" blue plastic 2x2 boxs. My question is about silver eagles.I have yet to find a cb-2x2 that holds them so i keep them in the 2x2 plastic flips ( yeah the safe kind ) and then I run a piece of scotch tape along the 3 edges ( outside edges ) to give them a little airtight safety. I have been told that the scotch tape even though it does not touch the coin in any way is bad for them and it causes the coin to tone and the longer i use the tape the more damage it will cause !! Does anybody know if this is true ???
I have heard the same thing myself and I also use tape, not staples, to secure my flips. I haven't seen any toning on any of the coins that I have had for years now, but that does mean anything, I guess. I just don't see how the tape can influence the coin from out side of the flip. Besides flips with no staples look so much better in the heavy duty 20 piece page sheets. I only use flips for halves, quarters, dimes, nickels and cents. I buy airtites for Silver Dollar coins. I have a complete collection of Silver Eagles and I have purchased airtites to preserve them. I get them from a coin dealer for .99 cent a piece which is a small prices to pay for being able to handle them with out worring about causing any damage to them. The 2X2 flips if there are ones for Eagles just would not offer much protection from a thin layer of mylar.
I avoid sticky tapes at all costs. Imagine this, if the cellophane tape is actually some thin sheet of plastic and little adhesive added to the bottom and rolled up, what is that plastic made up of? Remember that we had plenty of issues with PVC plastic. The idea of plastic alone just shudders me.
Adhesives can be corrosive, but they do make 2x2s in "Crown Size" which will fit SEs. If you use these, be sure to mush down the staples so they don't scratch other coins. Having warned about adhesive fumes/residue, there are probably other factors that have as much or more impact. Where I live is very humid much of the year and the air is a bit salty due to the ocean being 100 yards away. So, those are bigger concerns for me.
There is an archival polyester tape ( both single and double sided ) 3M product which is used in mounting or certain repairs, claims it has none of the horrible characteristics of regular cellophane tape. It is expensive, at nearly $30 a roll, but I would avoid any adhesive around coins myself. JMHO
Thanks for the info everybody. I was aware of the crown size but I thought they only came in 2.5 x 2.5 I will look around more and try to find some 2x2 size. I had just found out about the archival polyester tape . My mother who is into crafts told me about it last night . Thanks again for all the info !!!!!!!!
