Got to admit no matter what I like this puppy. Notice how BER of liberty looks weak - this is where it has been re-cut. At least that is what I think - the R looks really funky under the scope. Hmm - grade opinions. The one thing I noticed is how clear cut the denticles are. I think I'll add some microscope shots of the BER and the rims. This coin is almost to good for set.
Very nice looking cent. Looks like an N-4, with IBER recut on the obeverse, a long right foot on the second A (A2) on the reverse, and a broken right foot on the final A (A3) on the reverse. The coin is an R-2+ piece. I would probably grade it an 40 net 35 by EAC standards. If graded by TPG, I would probably go with XF-45. Very nice looking coin!
Good eye Shortgabob~ - I would call it XF40 , the pics are not clear enough for me to make a consice decision on the other aspects that would affect my grade but from what I can see , Ill call it that .
I believe that the coin grades right at the break point between VF-35 and EF-40! I am not too familiar with the Variety but it looks like a re-cut "BER" in LIBERTY. However, it also appears that the "E" has been retooled at some point in time. There appears to be a fairly large depression (dent or other) to the Northeast of the split between the "B" and the "E" and along with the wear and rub on the hairlines above and in front of Miss Liberty's ear, the "E" may have been damaged and appears to me to have been retooled. Also, are there Die pairing Varieties known for this Date? I thought I would ask as I noticed a fairly significant difference in the ticking from the Obverse to the Reverse. Frank
The E has that look because it was significantly recut on the die, so in essence, the die was retooled. Yes, there are 12 different die pairing varieties for this variety. This particular one is known as a Newcomb-4, which combined obverse 3 with reverse B.
Nice N-4. I'd EAC grade it 30 details avg+ net VF 20 I'd TPG grade it XF 45. Thanks for sharing...Mike
