Man, you guys are getting all the cool stuff. Congrats, it is a beautiful coin! Gotta love old Hadrian!
Nice looking sestertius from the travel series. I only have a lower quality denarius with Africa. HADRIAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, Laureate head right REVERSE: AFRICA, Africa reclining left holding scorpion & cornucopiae, basket of grain at feet Struck at Rome, 136 AD 2.76g. 18.5mm RIC 299/RSC 138
You all almost have me sold on a Sestertius. I really like the OP coin!!! I also think its great that Hadrian thought that Egypt and Africa were different places.
Much of Hadrian’s coinage commemorates his visits to many of the important Roman provinces and served to propagandise his willingness to travel and devote his direct attention to the running of the disparate parts of the Empire. Struck towards the end of his reign and when Hadrian hadreturned to Rome, this coin falls into the ‘Province’ category, a remarkable series of issues marking Hadrian’s achievements and highlighting theextent of the Roman Empire. Egypt is shown in female form and with the distinguishing attributes of the sistrum of Isis and an ibis at her feet, while the basket of fruit or corn on which she leans could be taken to reference the grain ships that regularly sailed from Egypt back to Rome. I found some information
Absolutely great new coin (congrats, ro) Wow => I'm amazed that Oki didn't chime-in to this thread!!?
Nice! But you need to clean the dust off of the coin before you take a picture! Hope you don't mind I spliced the two images
Your new photo makes the surfaces look much better. Your tone differences especially highlights the reverse better than mine ever could.
