So my local dealer had a random group of ancients come in, and of course I am always a sucker for random groups of ancients. Its not really my forte, but really, who can pass up a group of boys riding dolphins, lifetime Alex tet, as well as a good old Owl. Yeah, I know there is a random RR and denarius in there, but it was kind of thrown in. A geeky cool thing about the lot is the owl is from Bowers Ruddy. This had to be from 40 years ago.
Hmm, you wouldn't be needin' that one there would'ja? Fantastic group MM! My favorites is (that one)^10.
The sad part is my lack of photography skills couple with silver being reflective, means the photograph is very bad. The Alex tet, especially, is much more attractive in hand. Even though I know I will buy more group lots like this when they pop up, I think I will leave these coins to you @TIF. Idk, Greek silver, while I appreciate the artistry, just doesn't do much for me. I am weird. For some reason copper seems more inviting than the shiny cold silver does. I didn't have a nice Owl, (this one is nicer in hand), and I wanted at least one dolphin Tarentine issue, but it just feels I will look at these coins for a week, and put in the sdb for the next decade or two. Btw, nice avatar @ancientcoinguru. Its the RR with a greyhound on the reverse, right? I bought one when my mother passed, as she had greyhounds.
First consideration is that I see no reason to doubt any shown. The question I have is the $695 on the owl which seems quite high for the era of that seller (but they were high) and low for today. I know you buy coins in bulk often while I never do making me wonder how much a discount you get for taking the bunch. The Greeks shown would be easy sells for any dealer so I'd not give much a break to move them. The Romans are more ordinary so I'd expect a cut rate. Great group!
You are probably correct sir. I never saw the price until today, as there was a tiny little sticker over it. However, it appears to me someone wrote over black ink with blue at some later date. Btw, the Alex's and Tarentine pieces are all in Jonathan Kern flips.
Wonderful assortment M-man!!! I'd love to go after such a 'group', but I suspect my usual monthly budget would not be quite enough...
Yep! Here's my greyhound. When my mom passed, I bought an Alexander the Great coin, since she always supported my interest in ancient history/art/coins. Nice to hear someone else honored their mom in this manner.
@ancientcoinguru Here is mine, photo by CNG: The portrait looks like my mother when she was younger, she kept greyhounds, and the minter was Postumius. The coin closed just a week after my mother died. It was a way too weird of coincidence, so I HAD to own it.
You would think they are "spare", but one has a group of grapes, one has the head of a nymph, and another is an earlier issue holding a cup. That, plus I am a hoarder, means I have no "spare" coins. No, really, its because I am a hoarder.
