Located this new addition to my collection at Civitas Galleries' table at the last PNNA show a couple weeks back. I've been looking for a coin like this for a while, but they are difficult to find in this sort of grade. Would have liked this one to be a 30 Sols, but when I saw it in hand, I just couldn't pass.
yeah, they are adjustment marks. They really pop in the image, unfortunately. In hand, they aren't distracting, and the luster is even stronger.
Adjustment marks give the coin character IMO. They are evidence of how coins were made then. Somebody (probably a woman) weighed that planchet and found it to be overweight so she filed off enough silver to get it down to the specified weight. That's a much more hands-on method of coin production than today's fully mechanized method. I like the coin.
Congrats on the coin Rick :thumb: Never was lucky enough to find one of those myself, sure always wanted one though.
Well done Rick ...... very nice coin and nice grade too !!!:hail: Great addition to your collection, looks nice in your collection website.
Thanks guys. I don't know what took me so long to develop an appreciation for french coins. A remember a couple years ago, I seem to see a lot more than I do now, and I just shrugged them off... now that I'm looking, the market seems to have tightened up a little.
