Just won this one... MYSIA: Anonymous, ca. 500-450 BC, EL stater (16.07g), Kyzikos, Von Fritze 93, pl. III, 12; Boston 1469; SNG von Aulock 1192; SNG France 230, dog standing left, right fore-paw raised; tunny fish below / quadripartite incuse square, VF. I tried to find references but all I could find for this variation was a hecte. Anyone seen this one before? Regardless, I'm pretty sure it's authentic and I got a good price. Still was quite a few bucks, though.
Congratulations! That's a type I've almost bid on many times (the hekte version). I don't recall seeing the "wolf at bay" in the denomination of stater but I wasn't looking for that weight. Interesting though. Are you confident in the seller?
Here's one coming up at Roma. http://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?auction=1487&category=31621&lot=1343252
Never bought from them but they are a few hours North of me. If it seems shady I know people I can turn to to authenticate it. I also have a dissection microscope, sub-mg scale... If I had to guess though I'd say it's real. The one on Roma I think is a bit nicer. There's another stater going for p cheap as well. Hammer price on this was 3600 and I hardly ever see them go for that low, so we'll see. I just had to return some stuff to eBay because it was listed as unc/problem free but had hirlines all going in the direction. Couldn't tell without a loupe and light.
I think if I paid 3600 (dollars I presume), I would spend the little extra to sent it to David Sear or some such to have it authenticated.
That's a sweet new hound-dog!! => wow, I love your new coin (oh, I am not sure which seller you are referring to?) ... why TIF, are you insinuating that this coin is suspect, or what? (I think it rocks) => good luck, brother (I hope it all ends well, my friend) Cheers
I think it's legit. I can probably test for the metal type using a high-precision resistance meter. Gold and silver are pretty close to each other and it's an odd shape bit I'm curious if this can be done with a certain level of accuracy. I'm not dunking it in in water ;3

I don't see anything alarming in this coin. $3600 (+17.5% BP) is a good price, probably a bit low. If you've never owned an electrum stater before, they're fun, heavy pebbles to hold, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you receive it!
I hven't; only hectes and trites. Im excited! I get a few more goodies next week, too ;3 Oh, and I think there was only one other bidder who bid the minimum. So yeah, seems so :3 I also looked up the place and they got GREAT ratings.
It's a super coin. I also don't see anything about the style or fabric that looks suspicious, but this is the sort of coin I would really want a more experienced eye to look at.
