As it should be obvious to most that ships have been a significant part of my past. I have started a small collection of mostly circulated coins/token with ships on them. The first part of the challenge is to darn hard so lets skip it... The second part of the challenge is to post a picture of a coin/token with a ship on it and give the following details about the coin: Country Denomination Years of Issue Metal Type Ship Name if available Reason why you chose this coin No one can use the same ship twice and no one can use one of the coins shown in my attachments. Anyone who completes the second part of the challenge will be entered to win. Winners will be drawn at random. The contest ends on February 18th 2007 at 5 pm Eastern US time. I hope you enjoy the contest and good luck. Darryl

First one is: USA not 1 cent 1841 copper I think the ship's name is the Constitution I like the style of the old sailing ships The second one I know nothing about other than I beleive it's from Prince Edward Island, but once again it has a cool ship on it
Country: USA Denomination: $1 (Commemorative Proof) Years of Issue: 2000 Metal Type: 90% Silver, 10% Alloy Ship Name: Not sure of the name, but the boat is a Viking longship Reason: My son's name is Leif. For some reason Leif Ericson is one of the historical figure I've been particularly interested in.
Here we go ... http://www.deutsche-sammlermuenzen.de/bmf/art/shop/gedenkmuenzen/910027sj_gr.jpg Country: Germany Denomination: €10 Years of Issue: 2006 Metal Type: silver (Ag 925) Ship Name if available: not a specific one; this is a Hanse-Kogge (Hanseatic League cog) type ship Reason why you chose this coin: It is the very first coin from my country (Fed. Rep. of Germany) that features a ship - and it happens to be a nice one. Christian
Thanks for entering coswho. I also love the old coins with ships on them. I looked around on the net today and it seems that the Canadians had many tokens back in the mid 1800's. There were a number of books on just this subject. Ebay had a few that looked similar to yours. I am waiting to pick up a 1700's 6 stuivers like bonedigger's (Ben's) Avatar and a Polish 5 Zolte. In the case of old ships it does not matter to me Coins or Tokens - they are all great! Take Care. Darryl

Here are my coins. I don't think the first one is the same as your #8 since you list it as a plain edge and this coin is reeded. Coin 1 - Country: Portugal Denomination: 10 Esc. Years of Issue: 1955 Metal Type: 90% Silver, 10% Alloy Ship Name: Not sure of the name Reason: Cool foreign coin Coin 2 Country: USA Denomination: $.50 Years of Issue: 1893 Metal Type: 90% Silver, 10% Alloy Ship Name: Santa Maria Reason: My first commemorative found in circulation
"Journey to Hogwarts" Country: Isle of Man Denomination: One Crown Date of Issue: 2001 Composition: CuNi, AR, or AU (unclear what denomination gold coin is given) Ship Name: Unnamed tender used to transport Harry Potter and friends to Hogwarts Why Chosen: Two reasons. First, it's one of those amusing coins minted by a small nation/political body for the express purpose of raising funds through sales to collectors. And a pretty funny one, at that. Second, it's Harry Potter on a legal tender coin. C'mon, you know you like Harry Potter. This is a talbot allum and lee token. From the USA, but not authorized from the mint Denomination is one cent Composition of Copper The ship is simply a merchant ship I chose this one, for no reason other than the fact that I really like the design. The picture was borrowed from the coin facts website.
My #8 is a 1932 and has a different obverse as well. Very Cool find for coin 2. I have watched a few go on EBay thinking I may get one. Thanks for playing... Darryl
