A couple of new ones arrived today. Of course any and all comments are welcome. Now off to see what else I missed in the forums today.
The 1811 looks like a nice vf-25. The 1813 has vf details but looks cleaned, however appears to be retoning nicely. Nice coins.
You know - I actually agree with your choice of grade on the 1811. Now having said that - the holder says VF30 and I am still more than please with it. The 1813 is actually alot darker than the picture turned out - I did not notice it, but I changed the angle on the coin because it was causing more glare than the coin in the holder. Again having said that I think the area around the clasp and above the eagle make me think the same thing as what you said. All in all I have very pleased with the two coins. Not sure but only a few more dates and varieties and I MIGHT call the capped bust halves complete. Still not sure about that. I sure do like the coins.
They sure are some lovely coins! I've got a couple of questions about the 11 if you wouldn't mind indulging me... Is that a die or planchet crack on the reverse (10 O'clock) what's going on under the nose and to the rear of the head on the obverse? I think older coins like these have a heck of a lot more character than the modern stuff. I wish I had more but if you want nice quality examples you're limited on quantity (on my budget one a month probably) so I'm sticking to one thing at a time and something a bit more managable on a tight budget. I like getting coins a bit more often than 12 times a year
The 1811 pictured is an overton-109. The crack you see is a large die crack. The spot to the rear of the head appears to be a light ding.
Ohhhhh man, those are some great looking coins. The 1811 looks VF-25ish and the 1813, VF-25ish too. Take Care Ben
I'm not so sure about that being a die crack on the reverse of the 1811. Way too straight for my comfort. Never seen one that linear. I'd have to see that one up close and personal. I agree with cleaned appearance of the 1813. But how many coins of that era WEREN'T cleaned at one time. Looks like a nice die clash behind Liberty's head and in that space just under her. Overall two nice coins. I wouldn't kick then out of my album.
Thanks for all the comments. Under the nose looks like a well placed little tick mark, but the only way you see it is looking dead on at it. It is really tought to see from any other angle. And Kanga - use Heritage to look at some other 1811 O-109's the die crack is pretty straight. Not sure what caused it, but thought it was cool.
The more I look at that 1811, the more stuff I see, particularly on the reverse. Die cracks over "UNITED"? Repunched "0" in "50"? And I have no idea what's happening with the "C." THAT'S a coin with personality. I like it.
The cracks mentioned are part of the diagnostics of the 109. As for the C - it looks like this one on heritage - with the lump inside the C being a little larger on mine. I admit one of the things I look for in CBH's are die cracks and such. It seems to make them easier to identify, plus like you said - "it gives em character". Attached are a couple of closeups of the "c".
Wow, nice coins! Between you and Bone, I've been considering going into Bust coins, keep 'em coming. :thumb: Phoenix
Looks like a snot trail to me. Give the girl a hanky so she can blow her nose! :goof: Ribbit Ps: About the only way I could like your DBH's any better is if they were my coins instead. :hail:
