today i asked a guy if he had any coins and he took out a small jar of coins. A little bag had about 15 1909vdb coins some of which were unc. he was selling the vdbs for 8$ so i dunno why i didnt buy one. Now the jug i didnt have time to look through but i saw a few uncirculated coins on top and i looked at them they were two 1924 wheats and a 1921 wheat. I picked those 3 coins up for 1$!!!! This was an amazing deal and im sad i didnt look threw the rest of the jug of probly 3000 pennies. I dont doubt theres a 1922 or 1914d or 1931s in there.....
no they were i checked em with loupe its that the guys were really unexperienced. they arent coins ellers they do general antiques.
All the more reason they might be counterfeit. Only takes ten seconds to google the value of a VDB. The fact it's at a flea market increases the odds, imho, that they're counterfeit.
he said that they retail at 12$ per......which is true for vdbs that arent in au or better for the most part and some of the coins were only fine condition. i convinced him down to 8$ he was originally at 14$ actually
I 99% believe it was legit. I do flea markets a lot and there are TONS of people who has just a few misc coins along with other antiques and dont even know much about them. Like I was able to pick up 2 nickel books which were mostly filled and both had all but one of the silver war nickels for only $5 each! the silver alone was $40! The best deals are at flea markets and garage sales
I doubt the '09VDBs were counterfeit. I know people counterfeit everything but I got a graded MS62 for 24 bucks so they don't exactly carry a high price. Now if it was on 09-S VDB I would call counterfeit. edit: We also must consider what UNC is in this case.
I enjoy selling coins at my local flea market... where else can I sell my circulated Ikes, SBA's and Sac's for the bargain price of two for three dollars? I get my inventory from the bank (with my favorite tellers setting them aside for me). Whenever they get a bunch of Kennedy halves in, I'm able to unload them at four coins for three dollars. It amazes me just how many people have never seen an Ike, or a SBA, or even a Kennedy half. I usually end up with a $50 to $60 profit, and probably have "jump started" more than a few people into the hobby of coin collecting.
Why would someone waste time counterfiting a $12 penny? Seems like there's much higher margins to be made.
I have a counterfeit V nickel that if it was real would only be worth about $3. People counterfeit anything nowadays
It seems it would cost more than $3 to make a $3 fake. How cheap is it to make these fakes? No one counterfeits $5 bills that I've ever heard of, they do $20's and above.
