    I am happy to put you to work. Please provide the country, denomination, date, and KM# for each of these coins. When you are finished, I would be glad to send you the duplicates from this little bag of coins. The duplicates are from this country & a couple others.

    Coin A.

    They're from Iran/Iraq... forget which country uses the lion/sword thing. As far as the years, you can figure them out by using this;

    If V-Nickel didn't recognize the country, then he would find the lion & sword device on one of the instant identifier pages in the front of the KM catalog. The numbers & common translations are also on a page at the beginning of the book. 90% of the fun can be identifying & researching the coin(s) in this manner.

    The lion, sun, & sword device goes back something like 500 years. It has been used on the flag of this country. According to Wikipedia, during the Safavid era, the lion and sun stood for the two pillars of society, the state and the Islamic religion.

    I have the 1800's and 1900's world coin books. They are great references. I use them all the time. Mine are from 2006 but they work just fine for me. The prices are a little inflated (except silver and gold coins).

    I was thinking the exact opposite actually... if you compare Krause prices to the Red Book for American coins or the Charlton Catalog for Canadian coins, Krause usually has the lower price.

    The Charlton boys must be smoking the drapes when they value Canadian coins, actually... :)

    @Idhair.....The first piece You have is a copper Japanese 100 Mon. (1835-1870) The front reads 'tem po tsu ho'. (from the Tempo era, 1830-44) and 'tsuho' which means coin or circulating treasure. The reverse reads 'to hyaku', which means 'worth 100'. (worth 100 Japanese coins, as Japan`s currency was known as Mon) This coin was a transistional piece from the Shogun empire to the Meiji restoration. Your first pic of the front is correct, but the second showing the reverse is upside down. (Japanese has to be the most difficult language on the planet) :)

    I have seen this coin for sale ranging from $17-25.50. (depending on condition) Ironically this is the only foreign coin I own....It was a gift from a friend, and I have always liked it and found the history of it interesting as well.

    Also notice that the OPs new book is modern world coins, 1901-2000, so he won't be able to appraise those earlier coins. :(

    I was about to post a Hollandia Dutch colonial then I re-read the OP and backed out. Maybe if the OP celebrates Christmas, he will receive a gift such as a guidebook on earlier coins and can help us out then. :thumb:
