well this is a 1964 Kennedy half dollar in a PCGS sample OGH this holder was used from Dec 1989 to Jan 1990 and is scarce to find
I removed my previous comment…I guess sample means not an actual authentication or certification…doesn’t look MS to me, too many field marks, cheek and neck abrasions and large contact mark. I won’t comment on the blurry reverse.
sorry about the blurry pic got a new webcam and still trying to figure it out and these types of slabs were to let members knows that a new slab was coming out didn't matter the coin inside
yeah i bought the slab cause sample slabs are hard to find nowadays and since i didn't have a sample slab in my collection just had to have one
Every time I go to a major show, I hit up on the grading companies for sample slabs. By far, PCGS is the most generous.
well never been to a major coin show myself but i gather PCGS does give more sample slabs out then most
I think I have an NGC sample slab with a cheap East German aluminium « penny » inside. You can have it if you want
What ever happened to "Buy the coin not the slab. Silly quote: "Hey man, take that 1909 S-VDB out of the slab and I'll give you a thousand buck for the slab, duh."
Not to look a gift-horse in the mouth or anything, but c'mon...if PCGS is the "most generous"...by consensus it seems...and they listed the sample coin in the sample slab as MS...why wouldn't they just go ahead and finish the MS-- with listing the number grade...? Seems to me it's just a ploy...a temptation...they know some can't/won't resist and they'll end up with some additional grading fees. It's all part of their PR...a calculated part.
here is a article about what kind of slabs are desired https://coinweek.com/education/coin-grading/buy-the-holder-not-the-coin-10-slabs-to-look-for/ PCGS Museum of Coin Holders link tells what kind of holder and when it was used and how rare they are or aren't https://www.pcgs.com/holdermuseum
