My boyfriend is a coin collector. I am looking to surprise him with a coin for Christmas. Can anyone tell me anything about this coin? Is it a good buy? http://cgi.ebay.com/1871-CAL-GOLD-2...89?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5addb43799
It all depends on what he collects exactly. If he is a big fan of that particular coin its a good buy, if hes not, not a good buy. Sometimes its best to surprise him with a trip to his coin shop and say here's your limit, spend away. That way he'll get what he really wants and at the prices he feels are fair.
Do you know anything about his collecting interests ? Why were you interested in the Gold coin ? Personally I would stay away from these MS 63 graded gold coins. Here is a link to an auction for the same coin in the next grade up, and I assure you it is without a doubt far more problem free that the other MS63 Ebay offering. Of course you going to pay a bit more, but in the long term, should you need to sell this, this one will hold it's gold and numismatic value far better.http://www.davidlawrence.com/invent...ed-Coinage/auc/541/lotid/857872#largeImageanc Click on the link to view. This piece in my opinion is a high end 64, with proof surfaces, a much more desirable coin. If your budget is constrained , I guess the EBAY offering is an okay price where it is right now. It's going to go higher in five days or so perhaps.
This a California small gold dollar dollar and looks to be a great coin. I dont know alot about these but maybe someone who knows more will come along. The price seems in range by my guide book but that doesnt meen much in actual sales prices. In the grade shown and the time left in the auction I would expect the price to go higher tho.
If you know for certain that he has a specific interest that particular coin then it would probably be a great gift. But if you are guessing on what coin he might like then you would be far better advised to follow the other suggestion and let him pick out the coin he wants. I say this because coin collectors are quite often very particular about their coins. Having been one for 50 years I feel qualified to say that
This is california gold made by private companies with gold that was not being put into officail issues made by the U.S. mint. If he is interested in private gold, it seems to be at a good price.
