Wow, that's a great design and a nice example, too.

Wonder what it's like to carry a thunderbolt in one's mouth?

Probably like tasering one's tongue, I suppose. Ow.

I've been avoiding giving you likes after you started begging for them, but that OP coin definitely deserves one. That lion reverse is amazing. Great buy.

That's pretty cool. Here's a lion walking left on a little bronze provincial from Philippopolis:

The Caracalla/radiate lion design also comes on an antoninianus:

    Caracallaradiatelion.jpg
    22 mm. Stuck 215 AD.
ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, radiate bust right
PM TRP XVIII COS IIII PP
radiate lion walking left with thunderbolt in his mouth.
    RIC 273d. BMC 150.
This is the first year of issue for this new antoninianus denomination.
Hill 1497 says "R3" (very rare in hoards)
"The radiate lion symbolizes the Emesan solar deity and religion to which the imperial family had ties through Julia Domna. It would attain much greater significance in Roman society under the rule of Elagabalus." [quoted from CNG 40]
