There is a new $50 gold buffalo commemorative coming out soon. Do those cost the same amount as the regular one ounce gold coins, and how fast do they tend to go up in value. I haven't heard of these before, but I'm pretty new to this.
I don't think anyone knows what they are going to cost for sure as I don't think the mint's really posted any info. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a bit higher premium than the AGE's, but have nothing to base that on. Value will, in large part, be tied to the bullion market.
I'd have a hard time justifying buying that coin for whatever price it commands..$700...$800...$900....just think of the beautiful historic coins you could buy instead...no thanks.
I've learned to do the opposite of what people tell you to do on this website. For some reason people don't like to give SERIOUSLY good advice about good investments. nemisis58, In other words, buy one or as many as you can. Oh and thanks for the headsup about this coin, I didn't even know about it. Sounds like the real deal.
Who was giving investment advice? If I was investing I'd probably consider one or a few depending on the premium. If I was collecting I, personally, wouldn't buy any because it doesn't fit my interests which is similar to what Mik said.
When answering this question, the first thing to clear up is the fact that this new Buffalo isn't a commemorative coin. It is being produced as competition for foreign gold coins that are more pure than the existing Gold Eagle. This Buffalo will be somewhere about .9999 pure or 24 K. So soft that it will need to be incased in plastic to keep it from marking up fast. The cost will be considerably more than the existing AGE as the amount of gold is greater. The coin will be out shortly and will be sold as bullion. I hope this helps.
I guess the point could be made that gold is gold, is gold! But isn't the purity of gold the determining factor for producing this particular coin. To be in competition with foreign countries that are already minting a coin in .9999 gold or 24 K. as opposed to the 91.67% gold Eagles. I'm sure it will cause the mint to charge a larger sum for the individual coin.
I'm not questioning what the mint will charge, it very well may be more. I'm just saying that the gold Buffalo will contain 1 oz of pure gold and that the $50 AGE contains 1 oz of pure gold. But the gold Buff, just like the other .999 world gold coins, will be smaller in size than the $50 AGE.
Is this "serious" investment advice? "Buy one or as many as you can" without having seen one, without previously knowing it existed, when it isn't available yet, and you don't even know the price? Anyway, anything with a buffalo on it seems to command a premium price, so it's a good marketing choice by the Mint. When adjusted to a price-per-ounce basis, many of the modern gold bullion coins sell for as much or more than many $20 Liberties, which somehow seems out of whack. No doubt there will be First Strike Buffalos, MS69/70 Buffalos, Proof 69/70 Buffalos, HSN numbered and limited Buffalo collections, and who knows what else all over the place from all of the major TPGs. Maybe it will take the price pressure off of the older gold coins. I probably won't buy one.
Just wait until they release the gold First Lady coins - then you're gonna see a frenzy. With the design returning to the classics - yeah, they're gonna go with the Liberty Bust design - and a mintage of 25,000, it'll be like blood in the water off the Great Barrier Reef.
Not really....no one can give seriously good advice on that topice....how can they when it is all just a guess. What most of us do here is try to encourage collecting NOT investing--because if you collect you will be getting something you LIKE...and if it goes up that is great but you don't really mind if it goes down. If you invest then you buy the item if you like it or not...and it MUST go up.... If you looking for investing advice.....I don't think any of us will be any help....as we don't make guesses as it will only cut down our creditability. Speedy
Im with speedy .. and with that in mind.. i wil be getting a Buff gold coin, just becasue the design has always fascinated me, and i will prolly pick up a Martha 1st lady coin ...
Can anyone post a link to these upcomming coins ? The 1st ladies & the Buffalo- I have checked the mints site & can't seem to find anything. Thanks
Here's an article with some good info. Better start saving up since they will only be offered in 1 oz. size. http://www.gold-eagle.com/editorials_05/haynes010406.html
And you won't find it on the Mint's web site - at least not for some time. But you can find the information in the numismatic press like Coin World & Numismatic News. You see the Mint holds press conferences and has seminars with collectors all the time. And it during these events that such news is announced. Then it is written up and published by the coin magazines long before anything ever appears on the Mint's web site. That's why I am always suggesting that collectors subscribe to these magazines. Not only do you get to learn a great deal from the articles they publish - you also get to keep up on current numismatic events before the rest of the world even hears about it.
I always follow the advice that people give me in this forum. If I hadn't,I would have made some seriously dumb purchases. Thanks to all my friends for steering me in the right direction.Just my opinion of course. This buffalo coin looks like it will be a nice addition to anyone's collection, for those that can afford one,but it's just not something that I personally would spend that much money on.A nice key date St. Gaudens would be a much wiser investment for the same kind of money and sure to increase in value well beyond the buffalo if investment is your main concern.
