New at this. Is this 1989 dime an error

Is this an error I’m new to this so I don’t know much

    I’m new to this and found what I believe is a 1989? Dime however it appears to say 1939 is this an error coin or am I not seeing what I think I’m seeing

    When I first saw this I thought it was 1939 it wasn’t until I took a picture with my phone that it seems to be 1989 but the 8 is not a complete 8 so I don’t know if this was a thing or not

    There is no way possible for that to be a 1939 since Roosevelt dimes werent made until 1946.

    just some crud / PMD that makes you think it's a "3" instead of an "8"

    I enlarged your date and you can see the 8 was damaged -

    But the 8 is the only part damaged there’s no other scratches on or near

    Nothing out of the ordinary there. It's entirely possible. Your coin is damaged.

    ok.. It's possible, I have seen it many times in my 31 years of collecting Mint Errors and seeing this type of damage o_O

    all it takes is the edge of a coin (or anything else) to hit against it in that particular spot to cause the nicks. Nothing more is needed. Think of all the times coins touch each other from cash registers to ppl's pockets, coin jars etc.

    I started writing in another thread the possible ways of PMD occurring. I think I had 1/4 of a page of ideas (condensed paragraph) off the top of my head, I'm sure I could have easily written 5 more pages before nodding off ...
