Just picked up this AE1-sized (27 mm) coin of this slightly less-than-common emperor. I love the look of the reverse; while the design may be a bit simple-looking to some, IMO it translates well onto this large flan size. Plus it reminds me of a very similar gold solidus reverse type of this period that I've seen. Jovian, Roman Emperor (ruled 363-364 AD) AE1 Obv: DN IOVIANVS PF PP AVG, rosette diademed, draped, cuirassed, bust right Rev: VICTORIA ROMANORVM, emperor standing right, holding labarum in right hand and Victory on globe in left, TES Gamma in ex, Thessalonica mint RIC 234 (seller's photos) - Wikipedia
Ironic too, with this particular type, because of the whole huge loss to Persia thing that happened to his predecessor.
Since I try to buy Julian II when I can, I run into Jovians as well. They are a fairly scarce coin all in all. Nice pickup!
My specialties/favorite areas of collecting are 5th century AD Roman coins and early medieval post-Roman coins (Ostro, Visi, Vandal, etc.). I am also very into early Byzantine and late 4th century Romans. But I will sometimes venture out into other areas (mostly Roman) of ancient/medieval collecting. Glad you all like my coin!
