Arrived this morning, a beautiful AR Denarius with a delightful portrait. Antoninus Pius AR denarius, Rome, AD 152-153. 18 mm, 3.35 g. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P XVI, laureate head right. / COS IIII, Annona standing left, holding corn-ears in left hand and resting right hand on modius set on prow to right. RIC 221; RSC 290; BMCRE 520. Feel free to pile on with AP, Annona, denarius or anything relevant.
Nice! Another slightly different example from a few years later: ANTONIUS PIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P IMP II, laureate head right REVERSE: TR POT XIX COS IIII, Annona standing left with corn ears & modius set on prow Struck at Rome 155/6AD 3.1g, 17mm RIC 249, C 983
Also as COS IIII but Annona is holding an anchor: AR Denarius, Rome, 147 - 148 AD 18 mm, 2.970 g RIC III Antoninus Pius 162; RSC 283; Ob.: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XI Laureate head of Antoninus Pius right Rev.: COS IIII (Consul for the 4th time) Annona standing left, holding anchor set on ground in her left and grain ears in her right hand over modius filled with grain ears
Just updated due to an incorrect attribution by the dealer. TR P XVI, COS IIII RIC 221 was struck 252-253 CE not 148-149 CE
Congrats on the new addition, it's an attractive denarius! Most of my Antoninus Pius are Roman Provincials that I've shown to death, so I took the opportunity to look for some Imperials that I hadn't yet ever photographed. I figured, how about these Dupondii, how often do people show Antoninus Pius Dupondii?.... Welp, not too thrilled with the results! First is the better coin, but I didn't get the best shot on this try. (The reverse doesn't actually look at all spotty like that, just bad lighting.) Second is the worse coin, but photo came out as intended. (That one really does look that bad!) Since that didn't turn out how I wanted... Here's an Antoninus Pius COS IIII Denarius I don't think I've shown before: These are unsorted purchases from the early internet days (c. 2000?) that I still need to properly catalog.
Antoninus Pius, Rome, denarius Obv.: ANTONINVS AVG. PIVS P.P., laureate bust right Rev.: TEMPLVM DIVI AVG. REST. / COS. IIII, front-view of the Temple of Divine Augustus, with 8 columns and 2 statues inside.
That is a very attractive denarius of one of my favourite emperors. Nice! I do not have an Annona type, but have a bunch of others, primarily bronzes:
