Hello friends, Just got my new Alexander Tetradrachm, what do you think? I like the design and portrait especially. Anyone can help with attribution? Any opinion on authenticity? ..and please, post yours as well Thank you
It is from the Kallatis mint in Romania https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=138801 Kallatis mint. Civic issue, struck circa 250-225 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, KA monogram; monogram below throne, grain ear in exergue. Price 929-930 var. (slightly different monogram below the throne).
Funny, I was just studying Heads of Herakles yesterday. Was looking for a different reverse - maybe Apollo. But I think I'll go looking for nude Zeus. I'm searching for something. Thanks for the possible lead. Edited: Nope, not Zeus!
That is a great Alexander tetradrachm @Svarog with a great looking obverse portrait. I recently picked up two Alexander tets, both minted under Seleukos I Nikator. Seleukos I Nikator AR Tetradrachm 320-316 BC Uncertain mint 6A 26.0mm 17.13g Obv: Head of Herakles right wearing lion skin Rev: Zeus Aetophoros seated left; in field left monogram on shield, monogram below throne. SC Ad 39.1 Seleukos I Nikator AR Tetradrachm 311-300 BC Babylon I mint 24.5mm 17.08g Obv: Head of Herakles right wearing lion skin Rev: Zeus Aetophoros seated left; in field left MI above grain ear, monogram in wreath below throne. SC 82.2c
The tetradrachms of Alexander III and his successors are certainly iconic! Mine is an ex AncientJoe. Zeus looks pretty buff, although he needs to work a little more on his arms . KINGS OF MACEDON, Alexander III AR tetradrachm, 17.14 gm late lifetime issue, struck in Aradus c. 324/3 BCE Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; I in left field; AP monogram below throne Ref: Price 3325 ex Colosseo Collection (images by Colosseo Collection)
Nice one, svarog. This one I picked up some months ago isn't going to take home any prizes for looks, but I do like it a lot.
Beautiful addition @Svarog ! Does the coin have that golden hue in hand? I'm a little late to the party, but here's my Alexander tet: Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III AR tetradrachm, 17.18g; Amphipolis mint, lifetime issue, struck under Antipater, c. 325-323 BC. Obv.: Head of Herakles right, clad in Nemean Lion scalp headdress tied at neck. Rev.: AΛEΞANΔΡOY Zeus enshrined left, throne without back and two leg struts, bright leg forward (archaic lifetime style), eagle in extended right hand, long scepter vertical behind in left hand, TE monogram lower left, concave field
Here is mine. A little roughness to it, but I love it. Kings of Macedon, Alexander III ‘the Great' (336-323 BC). AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 17.00g, 9h). Amphipolis, c. 332-326 BC. Obv: Head of Herakles r., wearing lion skin. Rev: Zeus Aëtophoros seated l.; janiform head in l. field. Price 6; Troxell, Studies, Issue A3. Some roughness, VF Saint Paul Antiques Auction 2 Lot 10, March 18, 2017.
Here's my other: Kings of Macedon, temp. Kassander – Alexander (son of Kassander). Circa 310-294 BC. AR Tetradrachm, 26mm, 16.8 g, 6h, Amphipolis mint, in the name and types of Alexander III.
