I recently purchased several new coins for my type set. My liberty gold dollar just came in the mail. It has a few tiny scratches under magnification, but has an overall pleasing look in the type set.

Next purchase is a bit more interesting. It is a half dime and I'm fairly certain it is in fact the 1861/0 variety. I've compared it to the redbook and several online sources, and it appears that the criteria has been met. It was an interesting purchase because it fills several holes. I currently have no half-dimes, nor do I have any overdate coins.

Let me point out that I am 99% certain that this coin has been cleaned, as its fairly obvious. I took this into account before the purchase. It also appears to have a weakly struck head, though the rest of the details on this coin look pretty strong.

How would you grade these two coins?

Nice coins. It does look likt there is something hiding under the 1 in the date.

Looks like a zero slightly tilted to the right. :thumb: Hard to tell exactly what's going on with the 6 but it isn't hard to figure it out. ;)

    Sweet! :thumb:

Thanks for the comments! If anyone has the 2009 redbook, there is a good closeup of the date on a "so called" 1861/0 half dime that seems to match mine. Though there is some controversy over whether it is actually an overdate variety or some sort of die tooling that occurred on this variety.

I'm curious as to how mine would grade. It looks kind of VF/XF ish, but I'm not a seated expert.

Nice coins. THe seated dime is in the vf/xf range. The pictures kind of wash out the wear, but still a couple of nice coins.

Compare yours to ones on Heritage:

In the Red Book they call it the "So Called" 1861/0 so I think it's probably not a true overdate but it goes by the "name". ;)

Yeah, im not quite sure what it is, but whatever it is, it sure brings in a hefty premium!! lol.

    2009 redbook
    1861 VF20 = $30.00
    so-called 1861/0 VF20 = $135.00

Yeah, I also looked at the Heritage auctions. All seem to indicate "so called" 1/0.

what would you guys grade the liberty dollar? I was thinking au-50.

Hey guys. I just received the dime today, and I must say I am very pleased. It looks much more "original" in person than the listing pics do. An old cleaning is possible, but it has some very nice gold toning, and not obvious hairlines. It also has some interesting die clashes(I believe that is what these are) on the obverse at 3 oclock right next to liberty. I LOVE THIS COIN...and the price I paid for it. :) More pics. I think it might go XF, just barely. What do you all think?

What's up with the baby denticles in-between the denticles @ K5 to K10 on the obverse? :kewl:

    Ribbit :)

Ps: You should use a little soapy water and try to remove some of the gunk around the date so the overdate is more visible. ;)

I'm not sure. I see what you're talking about, but I think the lighting exaggerates it. There is a bit of filled metal in between the denticles under a 30x loupe. I also notice this on my other seated coins, so I assume it's common?

Nice half dime, really smokin. The gold dollar is also another fine buy. You did pretty darn good.

don't worry toad. Honestly, a coin as small as a half-dime is almost impossible to even know what I'm cleaning if I were to clean it and I dont clean coins anyways. I also think that most of the dark gunk you see is shadow effects from the date. On certified examples, the "0/1" effect has a gunky rugged look as my pics display. I do agree with you toad that the "0/1" variety is "so called" and could be nothing more than some weird die issue.

    All,

I had just been alerted by an ebay member that the seller that my gold dollar was purchased from has been selling counterfeits. I do not believe that the gold dollar I have is fake, but I could be wrong. I dont see any raised lines(just scratches from cleaning) on the coin, and it contains some darker toned mint luster that cartwheels around the obverse. There are several nics too, but none appear to be raised under a 30x loupe. Here are some additional pics. Input please.

Here is the link to the sale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=360077970799 Look into his feedback, and you can see that one person recently left neg feedback stating that a gold dollar was counterfeit. The rest of his feedback is flawless. I think this person stated the coin was counterfeit based purely on the pictures that the seller posted, as he never actually paid for the coin. Do any of these sales look fake?
