(I am a coin collector and not a note collector and know nothing about paper money) I work at a bank and recently got in a cash shipment of $20,000 in new, crisp 2009 A $100 star notes with consecutive serial numbers starting with "06". I was going to buy $1000 worth to bring home and maybe sell some. I took a day off, and when I returned, they were all given out. Did I miss out on this, or are they not carrying much premium for the new star notes? Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Depends on the size of the run. Without a serial number you can't say for certain. However, there are those who will always spend a little extra to have a new release. That would be the only value they currently have. This premium goes away as they become more numerous. But star notes eventually will generate more value in the collector community, unfortunately that can take years to happen. How patient are you and can you tie up the money for the long haul? (Probably 10+ years or more.) You missed a small premium now but not enough to loose sleep over.
I was looking on eBay and some back in November were selling for about $40 over face. Now there are some BIN for $120, so I don't feel as bad. I figured as they hit the market more, it would devalue them. Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
At $120 minus the fees, packaging and postage; you would only make a couple of dollars. Is your personal time and effort worth it? In my case, not at all.
Without knowing the exact serial number range, it's hard to say. Just an average $100 star with no fancy serial number will fetch about $120 on eBay. That will leave you with about $2-4 in profit, if you offer free shipping. Unless one of the straps was 06666601 to 06666700, you didn't miss out on much. The reason that particular strap is valuable is because of the numbers 06666660 and 06666666. Both should fetch a decent premium. Had you gotten this strap within 2-3 days of the notes' release, an average star might've fetched $200. But that was a short lived run and I bet most of those buyers are no regretting their purchase.
