I was looking at my Nevada state quarter this morning. The design, the galloping broncos, is very attractive, but nothing on the coin, except for the words "The Silver State" suggest this is Nevada. The coin could have been from Montana, Wyoming, etc. They should have included at least a small map of Nevada or something else that is exclusively Nevada. I was hoping that a miner would be shown but that never happened. Who chose that design anyway?
Yes it was, but the votes didn't mean anything except as a way for the citizens of the state to choose their favorites. Every state still had to submit 5 designs to the US Mint. And the US Mint chose the 1 out of that 5 that they wanted to use. Neither the state, nor the people in that state had any say in the matter.
The large "NEVADA" that should be at the top of the reverse, in larger letters than the motto in a ribbon, must be missing from your coin due to a grease filled die - potentially a very valuable error coin!. BTW the famous brothel run by the US Government for a while after being seized by the IRS was the Mustang Ranch, not the Chicken Ranch.
Correct, although I believe it was fictional, made famous by "The Best Little *****house in Texas". The very famous and very real, and the first legal brothel in Nevada was The Mustang Ranch. Which makes the mustangs on the reverse of the quarter very appropriate. It see them and I think of The Mustang Ranch. The governor forbid the quarter to show gambling which is one of the things the state is most famous for, but in my opinion they managed to sneak in something it is also very famous for, being the only state in the union where prostitution is legal, the preservation of the memory of The Mustang Ranch.
Well, there is a Chicken Ranch Brothel in Nevada.... about an hour outside of Vegas... Don't ask how I know... I think they have a website too, but I will not look for or post a link to it, because of the YN"s we have here abouts... David
The Mustangs on the Nevada quarter depict a popular state symbol...not in reference to any brothels, which are looked down upon by most locals. There is the mustang roundup every few years in which hundreds, if not thousands of wild horses are rounded up and sold all over the world. Of course, if they remind someone of Nevada's shadyer side, at least it's reminding them about something of the state. Guy~
Nevada Quarter Don't get me wrong, Nevada's quarter is most attractive and the engraving is better than most. My comment was merely that I didn't feel the design would remind the average American of Nevada. If only a small outline map of the State could have been added; that would have done the trick!
The reverse design was probably a toss up between galloping broncos and Wayne Newton. The broncos won the Mints coin toss and there you have the results. Seriously, from my travels throughout the country, including Nevada, theres not really that much there to see except for desert and scattered towns here and there. Main attactions are rodeos, gambling, prostitution and the occasional Elvis sighting. Which would you rather see on the Nevada State Quarter.
Nevada Quarter I was hoping for something historic like a prospector with his donkey alongside, looking for silver (Silver State) or a ghost town with tumbleweed in the foreground or something scenic, like Lake Tahoe. I would have loved the skyline of Las Vegas, but knew it was impossible.
One of the four choices we had was a miner and I believe it had an outline of the State. I don't think the Mint chose ours as we (Nevadans) had a 2 week long voting period via the Internet and by Phone and the wild horses won out. On a different note, the DMV was going to issue an A-Bomb Vanity Plate but the Governor nixed that.
