Hi . I have many reasons to believe that this Roman coin represents either emperor Antoninus Pius or emperor Nerva. Could you please assist me to find out ? I cannot even guess the denomination since it weighs 11.64 grams. The shape is not totally round either. Thanks.

Given the head shape and the absolute negation of any visible legends; If I had to choose between Nerva and Antoninus, I would lean toward Nerva for two reasons.

    1. Nerva has a more rounded head where as Pius has a wider head. I think the head shape of Nerva more resembles yours.

    2. Nerva has always had a lower brow and "angry" look depicted on coinage, whereas Pius has always had a wide-eyed and "surprised" look on his. If you look at the eye relief on your coin, you will notice a straight edge brow that comes to a sharp relief. More reminiscent of Nerva as compared to Pius.

Thanks IS . Could you guess the denomination, considering the shape and weight?
    How scarce are Nerva coins?.

  5. There aren't many definitive denominations for strange measurements like this AE. Which is why they are typically referred to as AE(mm.) Given the weight you provided, I would venture to guess yours would be approximately 22 mm. Ergo, AE22.

As far as rarity, Nerva is rarer than Antoninus, generally speaking. But, it depends on mint, denomination, year, metal, obv, rev, legend, etc.

With your particular coin, the rarity difference might account for $1-2. Though cull coins are rarely sold as individual lots on ebay, I have seen some in similar condition go for $5.

Charles => yah, in that considerably worn condition, I'm thinking that OP-coin probably has a far higher "coolness-factor" than a lucrative "cash-value" ...

=> man, that coin would be the coolest golf-ball-marker on the course!! (no, seriously ... very cool as a "wow" pocket-coin)

... ummm but, that's merely my opinion (which sadly, is often slightly misunderstood)

Was there a Roman denomination known as " As " ? Was this coin minted in Antioch? Thanks
