I finally found a nice Nero denarius to add to my collection. Very nice condition for the price, so I just couldn't pass it up. Up until now I hadn't found any in my price range that weren't very very worn (where you could barely make out the portrait). Hope you like it...

Anyone else have a Nero to share?

Nice! Nero has a rather distinctive portrait, in my opinion. Here's mine, its not as nice, but I got it for a song:

    Nero, ruled AD 54-68
    AE As - 23 mm
    minted in Rome, 64 AD
    Obv design: radiate head right
Obv legend: NERO CLAVG CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P
Rev design: Genius standing half-left, sacrificing from patera over lighted altar & holding cornucopiae
Rev legend: GENIO AVGVSTI S-C, I in ex
    Attribution: RIC 215

outstanding Nero...sadly I still havent found one that fits my needs at the right price but I am always on the lookout...I may end up having to up the price I am willing to bid.

Just a note...this specific type is HIGHLY faked...I do not know how much you paid for it, but it might be in your best interest to show this to experts jst to make sure...

I am NOT saying I think its fake...just saying it might be a good idea to post it at forum and let some people look it over...

No worries Dru. I'm 99.9% sure it's real & Glenn Woods is a top notch dealer & numismatist. If it turned out to be bad he'd refund the money.

cool...I am just wary of nice high quality coins like this of the type that is so often faked...it is an outstanding example of the type and raises no red flags save that it IS such a commonly faked coin...it doesnt LOOK fake in anyway IMO...Glenn Woods is a trustworthy source as well IMO, he has some great coin on Vcoins. I love Nero portraits and this is a good representation of a typical Nero mug...congrats on the great aquisition.

I hear ya. It's gotten to the point on eBay that I pretty much steer clear of ancients there.

yeah...there are just a select few I will buy from there...the reason this coin set off bells for me was because of this:

If you look at the Nero in this large lot of fakes (color is off, they are all silver) it looks quite a bit like your coin (first coin second row). Upon further examination, there are some aspects of the fake that differ from yours...though they are VERY similar. Not to say it could be another variety of fake...but I doubt it...It just rang a bell.

    Drusus,

On the Nero you're reffering to, the style is VERY different : see the letters.

    Brian,

I'm certainly no expert, but I don't see anything wrong with your denarius.
