With the ever looming death of Nelson Mandela, how does the rest of the world see this iconic man and what does his death mean to the collector that owns a Nelson Mandela coin? I found this article a wile back and seems the growth potential is great. but could it become unaffordable for the common collector? http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=24985
As a South African I am proud of what Madiba and a nation has achieved and, from a numismatic point of view one has to appreciate the beauty and significance of these coins, especially the CW R5. It makes for truly a great coin with great design, strong strike, low mintage and incredible story. I believe that these coins to be the most significant coins of the 21st century so far. I have a few MS68 and are priceless for me.
Every South African coin issued for former President Mandela I have seen for sale is extremely expensive. It has been a stumbling block for completing my South African decimal coin collection in proof and uncirculated sets.
Wow Derik they look awesome, they are great coins I agree, I only wish I had more then just my PF69 90th Birthday Coin, kinda got side tracked from collecting some time ago, but still believe its an awesome piece of history to own. I agree with you onecenter, they have increased in value tremendously in the last 5 years.
When he dies I would expect there to be a period of time where they will be promoted and sell for inflated prices, how inflated I do not know. But after awhile it will cool down and prices will probably drop back to current levels, possibly eventually even lower levels.
And so our beloved Madiba has passed, tata Madiba, father of our rainbow nation, you truly were a great man. What a wonderful day of remembering his legacy, we shall always remember you, the world mourns as one. Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika
And so, here we are, 4 years later. Seems mintage figures do play a very important role, in fact, the most important role, when determining the value of any coin. The past, at least 15 sales of the 2008 Mandela R5 PF69 coins sold on average for around R1600 (US$125). Ungraded, the sold for around R600 (US$47) in 2017. This is a far cry from the estimated values, but those collectors who knew the importance of mintage figures were 100% correct when they said that the value would never increase this much.
