I see something there for real and it's not scratches you folks are better than I at this. Your Opinion is it or not 1942 over 41 D. ??
I'm not an expert and I could be wrong, but, IMO it's not authentic. The 1 looks wrong: Check this out:: The photo is from this site: https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/1539/dimes/mercury/1942-D/42-over-41/
^^^^ agreed, this site shows the same as above http://varietyvista.com/06 Mercury Dime/DDOs 1942D.htm
thank you, I guess it may fall into a "poormans 42/41" lol thanks for looking. That "1" under the 2 and the "leg" under the 4 kinda threw me off. but it is what it is. A shiny full banded 1942 Merc. Dime
Hopefully you have the coin in hand. If so the bottom of the 4 should be doubled and there should be a small knob showing from under the left bottom of the 2.
there IS a distinctive ONE under the two and a KNOB under the 4 it just does not look like the pictures in the red book maybe a different variety? This coin is in hand. larger picture
It could be a different variety, one that’s not in books. Not all varieties are created by one die. Best to protect this coin until you can check this out further. I can see what you mean from the photos but you know that looking at photos is sometimes difficult. Keep her safe!
It looks authentic, in my opinion. It's a keeper, seal it. Also wait for more experienced CT'ers to chime in. Thanks for posting it, good luck.
If you have an LCS near you that you know and trust you could use them. Or wait for a coin show. Or mail it in using the more expensive but safe method.
yeah I think I'll mail it in. The pixels in the picture doesn't show the details of the 1 under the 2.
Have seen many slabbed and authentic...all have had a more defined/pronounced "1" under the 2...no need for mag to see clearly. The position is right, but have never seen one this faint...if sure they may exist.
I bought it from a friend. I am going to offer it back to him for the price I paid for a "1942-D Merc. in Fine condition" I told him what I think. If he wants it back and send it in, I'll sell it back to him for what I paid, we'll see (friends are more important than hard feelings)
Isn't it a possibility that what appears to be the "1" inside the "2" could just be a die chip? Steve
I can see what you’re talking about, just can’t tell for sure from the photos. You know as well as I do that sometimes it very hard to tell in a photo. Books and other resources don’t always have every type of variety either. Let me know what you find out.
