I have been collecting coins off and on for years, but just recently got back into coin collecting. I am just getting into the grading of coins and have no idea were to start learning. Any links to help me learn how to grade coins would be very much appreciated.

I picked up this Large Cent the other day and was just wondering if anyone would be so kind as to try and grade it and give me a possible value of the coin. Thank you all in advance.

    I would grade that F15. It's worth around $25.

It needs a bath to treat some of the green crud on the reverse at 4k. Try acetone first. If that doesn't do it get some Verdicare. If still no luck, xylene (Xylol). Pure acetone and Xylol are available at hardware stores. Verdicare you can buy online at places like Wizard Coin Supply.

Thank you for the link Mark h, and thank you both for the grading.

What will happen if I do not clean the coin. Will the "Green Crud" spread? If so at what rate?

Just noticed I posted this in the wrong place. Mods could you please move it to the "What's it Worth" section.

Hard to say if it's active. My guess is it's probably stable and no further damage will be done. But it's probably treatable, with little to no risk, and will improve the appearance and your enjoyment of the coin.

Generally, PVC or verdigris should not be left on coins, if it can be removed.

I like to hear there's little to no risk in damaging the coin. Thanks again for the great info.

would grade f15 on wear, but it looks a little porous. If you are getting into the large cents I would suggest joining EAC, eacs.org. For grading late date large cents the best online source I have is Gary Hahn's website http://early-copper.com/grading.html These are choice coins verified by Bob Grellman, one of the experts in large cent grading. Gary's collection is pretty nice too:)

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

    VF details, corroded. Net VG.

    Worth about $25, IMO.

I'd say F. Nice color, but the green is scary.

Yea that Green scares me too. Any easy ways to get it off that haven't been mentioned yet?
