I'm not near my books but it should be easy to attribute. One thing that bothers me is some surface characteristics. There is are "new" counterfeits of this date that have been "detail" graded several months age by NGC and PCGS. Photos an info on other coin forums!

This is my first attempt to attribute so wait for others to give their experienced opinion. I think S.153 large wide date, 7 touches denticle.

I think this may be right.

S-153 is what I came up with as well.

Type I hair, large 8, and type II letters on the rev takes you down to just five possibilities, 146, 147, 148, 149, and 153.

146 and 147 have the gap between the ends of the wreath below the center of the E. That eliminates them.

149 has the 1 well away from the bottom curl. That's out.

On 148 the 1 points at the hair wave above it. On 153 it points at the bottom curl. On the OP coin it points at the bottom curl.

Looks more like VF-25/30 details. Nowhere close to EF/AU. You did good at $100.

No. Your coin does not display the crispness in the hair and the leaves that I'd expect for an EF coin.

OK, AU is out of the question, but I still grade it a nice XF (details), ok it's not that nice, but for $100, it's nice. Plus these are all 1797 examples and mine is 1798. Plus maybe you can't see my hair details because it's corroded.

    OK, I'm done. Lmao!

Your point? They are both type 1 hair styles, and I used 1797 because pictures of them are easier to find than type 1 1798 cents.

Corrosion does not account for the flatness in the hair strands. Nor does strike, because this coin is pretty well struck. Note how most of the hair strands in the XF examples are rounded, not flat.

NGC might call this XF details because they are lenient with details coins (I see overgraded by 10 points on a consistent basis).

By my standards and what I have observed with EAC, this is a classic VF.
