I ordered the 2008 Bald Eagle proof and unc. coin from the mint and got them at the introductory price. Today I'm going to my friend's son's Boys Scouts Eagle Scout Court of Honor. He's only 15 and already made Eagle Scout. I'm planning on giving him the Bald Eagle proof to celebrate his accomplishment. Howver, I actually bought the coin for my 12 year old son's collection, but he doesn't know I have it. I think the coin is beautiful and I want to buy the proof to give to my son and I just checked Ebay for the prices. The Ebay prices aren't that high, especially for NGC slabbed 69's. We're not into slabs, but I was thinking that it would be nice to have the slab so my son could just keep this coin out and look at it periodically. Should I just "buy it now" for about $55 shipped. That's only $5 more than buying a boxed one from the Mint. Or, should I wait to see if the price drops since most commemoratives don't spike in value. Thanks for your opinions.
Usually the initial prices are higher than later on. If the mintages are normal, the prices will drop for them.
The proof coin from the mint comes in a plastic airtite - would yield the same results and even fit better in his pocket if he wanted to carry it around as his pocket piece.
