Need Suggestions on Pricing Varieties

I just did a BIN on eBay for a coin that is a bit hard to find.
I spent about an hour trying to figure out whether the price was reasonable or not before I bought it.

    The coin:

My normal pricing sources are the greysheet and Coin Values.
I try to beat greysheet plus 50% of the difference between the greysheet and Coin Values.

But the greysheet doesn't list this variety, so an important half of my calculation was missing.
Teletrade didn't have any listings for this variety.
Heritage did, but not close to the grade.
PCGS had a big gap between grades so it's a bit ambiguous.
eBay completed auctions was no help.

Can you suggest any other reasonable sources?

What I finally ended up doing was comparing prices of a regular 1834 with this variety in Coin Values ($225 vs. $500; about double).
Then I estimated a greysheet value for a regular 1834 ($150) and doubled that ($300).
The difference between the greysheet and Coin Values was about $200.
Finally the estimated greysheet plus half the difference ($100) equals $400.
So I decided the BIN was a fair price.
Plus desirability was the final push.

There's GOT to be an easier way (or is there?)

First, nice coin, I can see the desirability angle.

Worked through your process, and agree with it. I don't have any sources in addition to those you checked. I can see why you made the buy. Maybe the seller used similar references. The bottom line I see is a seller and a buyer agreed on a value for a really nice coin! Well done :thumb:

I know for coppers there is a price list that covers varieties (CQR - Copper Quotes by Robinson) but I don't know about silver? :goofer:

However, your math looks reasonable and if anything, it may be on the low side. ;)

    Ribbit :)

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

For some varieties, there is no pricing guide. You just have to go with your gut, and decide how much you feel is right. There are clubs that specialize in this sort of thing, maybe they can help a bit more, although very few people collect half dimes, and even less collect them by variety. Its not like the large cents or Bust halves, where there are large and dedicated collector bases.

Looks like a nice coin, and if you are happy with the price, that's all that really matters in the end.
