Hi, I'm what you would describe as a sort-of, used to be, semi-serious amateur collector of US coins. I've recenlty moved into a small house, and need to cull some of the excess in my collection. I've never sold coins before (only bought), and I have a fairly good sized box of everything ranging from extras from proof & mint sets that I've broken up (for the quarters, halves, and dimes) to some slabbed Franklins to some of the now practically worthless 1980s and 90s commemoratives, intact proof sets, etc. Since I've never sold before, and since selling the stuff individually (on Ebay or wherever) would take me eons, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to go about selling. I'm in a rural area, and the nearest coin dealer to me is over 60 miles (and I don't know him nor his business practices). So... I'm basically looking for any advice anyone might have for me. Thanks! Butch
You have several options - but selling to a dealer is far from the best of them if you hope to garner the best price for yourself. You will likely get the best prices on ebay for the types of coins you mention owning. But you could also sell the coins directly to other coin forum members at several of the different coin forums. A few of them even have their own auctions. If you do not wish to go the ebay route - it's really not that hard and doesn't take that long - then try the forums. List your coins or sets for sale in the Buy-Sell-Trade sections and go from there. NGC, PCGS, NummisAdddict, ICG - they all have a BST board.
Ebay has a program called traders assistants or something like that, where you can consign your stuff to a regular seller and they'll do all the work for you. Of course, you need to do some good background checking on this before doing it.
