Hey, everyone! I've been a long-time lurker of this forum and enjoy reading all of the posts here. I figured I should create an account and join in on the discussion(s). I had a quick question. I've been wanting to purchase world coins under $50 per coin that are from the years 1000-1750ish AD. I really like the look of coins from that time period and I know good pieces from those time periods can be bought for under $50. The thing is, I'm not sure where to look to buy these coins online! I've searched "buy old English coins" "buy 1600's coins" and stuff like that and have only come up with sites that have beautiful coins, yet they're priced $100 and up. If any of you have any suggestions on some online dealers that have coins from that time period under $50, I'd be extremely grateful of any input.
Vcoins has many coins for under $50..... If you know something about coins, then look on ebay for ones that take your fancy, if in doubt post pictures here and ask advice on the coins you fancy...we'll help out. I have little experience, but there are a few folks here who are serious coin buffs and will aid you in your quest in a friendly and supportive manner.......
Ooh, tons of cool coins there at VCoins! Awesome suggestion, thanks. I like eBay, but I tend to shy away from it for coin purchases.
Ebay has them as well. Broad areas that would fit your bill would be silver Hungarian Denars from the 15th and 16th century, Spanish copper from 14th-16th century, etc. Ebay has a ton of junk on it, but still some good sellers and deals if you search hard enough. Use Vcoins to see various coins and pricing, but feel free to get better deals on Ebay as well.
Ignore ebay at your peril............remember buyer protection will ALWAYS look after you, so you cannot lose! Many people have coins to sell, but few have Vcoins stores to sell them in.....Why buy 1 coin on Vcoins when you can buy 2 on ebay for the same money.
While I agree there are many interesting coins in the range, I am having trouble figuring out what 'look' covers that time period. By the 1750's we are into the era of the large silver beauties some of which may have $50 in melt value so we know they are out of consideration. I would point out that the 'World' includes quite a number of places besides Western Europe that have some interesting coins in your price range if you are willing to consider them. The selection in Western Europe under $50 will be small silvers and bronzes in less than perfect condition after you tire of the most common Hungarian Denars and Spanish copper. I suggest the book Early World Coins and Early Weight Standards by Robert Tye paying attention to types he codes as L (low priced). Be careful, though, since his book also show ancients and there are so many of them under $50 that you could be tempted to start something that some of us find addictive.
Thanks for all of the replies! I appreciate the book suggestion dougsmit. I've been looking at ancients for awhile now, but I've never went ahead and bought one. I also don't really have a look that I go for. I just look at coins until I get a "connection" to one and feel like it'd be a good addition. I think I'm going to take several of you guys' advice and search for some of these coins on eBay. I thought about it, and if I just try to stick with sellers that have a large amount of positive feedback I think I'll be fine. eBay honestly just scares me because I lurk on a lot of coin forums, and the amount of "Chinese counterfeit" threads I see are eye-opening. See, coins from the time period(s) I'm looking for are not my specialty at all. It feels like I'm having to learn how to walk again so to speak as I learn what acceptable prices to pay for certain coins are and what is overpriced. It will be a fun learning process, that's for sure!
Well, these two babies were $70 & $75 each (delivered) => MACoins ... ... sure, it's a bit over your $50 threshold, but dats some sweet coinage!! 1415-1540 AD 1661-1670 AD
Those are absolutely beautiful man! I really dig that top one, what is that figure? It looks like a robed person doing something but I can't make it out.
