My pics cannot get close enough to show this but there is doubling on the bottom right of the second 8. Possible doubled die or re-punched date? It is not flat but nice and rounded. Was wondering if there were any listings on this as I do not have a Charlton catalog and it's the only one I have found. Any markers I should be looking for? Yes, it's been cleaned but not by me, it's the way I got in a bulk purchase last October. Thanking in advance. Tom ( It shows when enlarged.)
I know it has the C2 reverse and here's a picture of what the " Double 888 " looks like . I'm going to check the obverse die in the book Tommy .
Thank you for your help Rick. I just inspected this closer and it's showing doubling at the top left of first 8 and some doubling at the bottom right of the third 8. The dirt inside the last 8 may be hiding something though. I did this with a 30X loupe (it's my eyes that need this). I could check later tonight under my stereo microscope.
Tommy I agree that 8 looks repunched , and I might add that these LG Canadian cents have been calling my name for some time now! I'm really not a copper collector but again more and more these are drawing me in.
I was fortunate on my last trip to N.H. last year and picked up about 100 of these or more at Newfound Coin & Jewelry from the owner Doug, along with hundreds of better foreign. I've had some trouble with some in I.D.ing the Korean, Japan and Middle Eastern coins but they have led me on an amazing trip. Many high value coins. I caught him in the process of moving the store and he just laid binder after binder at me and sold them to me for a song. I was nearly able to complete my Canada large cent collection with the exception of the few key dates.
Well, with the 8-coin deal I mentioned in the World thread, I'm committed thru the end of the month anyways.
I don't know todays prices but these are fun to collect. Years ago, you could find them by the bucket for about a dollar each at coin shows.
I wisht I had bought some then, did buy several thousand British pennies, and dozens and dozens of pyatoks from Russia since I really like large bronze coins.
I have started these within the past year because they're interesting and fun, and best of all, they're really inexpensive.
