OK, Morgan buffs. Give me your thoughts and feedback. I’m thinking about future collecting projects. Among my Morgans are common dates. Real common dates. In a couple of cases, I’ve already upgraded with a higher grade. Here are the options: — Obtain a higher graded coin. — Go for a PL or DMPL for the date/mm in question. — A combination of the first two. — Leave it alone, say “Yup, that’s a common date” and use my ammunition ($$$) for other projects. As always, thanks in advance for your thoughts!
I'm sure you will get many different opinions on what you should do. The important thing to remember is, "Will you be happy with them?" That is all that matters. Chris
Depends on how you plan on storing them. If stacking them then just keep doing what you are doing. If you are putting together an album or a graded set, I would get the best looking ones you can afford. In other words "Don't Buy the Grade, Buy the Coin"
Can't say what you should do, but I can say what I'd do with the information presented: I'm shooting for the DMPL's. They are a whole 'nuther level of Morgan, a completely different experience with absolutely no peer in colleting. A huge Business Strike cartwheel that looks like it should have been called Proof, with surfaces quite literally large enough to shave in (if you're careful ). Of course, even a date set is so problematic as to be near-impossible....
Quick question and a little off topic from the op's question. Im a person who like to know the VAMs of every Morgan I have. Is it just me or are prooflike and DMPL Morgans harder to determine the VAMs on? And sticking with the op's topic; in my opinion I would and I do collect what I like. Whatever I personally think looks good. PL or DMPL or just a normal frosty Morgan. Just depends if it "speaks" to me. That's what I would collect. I find trying to stick to a certain type in building a set gets boring and I tend to stray off.
In a nutshell, PL's and DMPL's are usually either EDS or die-polished coins, and either way tend to lack many of the pickups normally needed for attribution. So, yeah.
For common date Morgans IMO go for the absolute most stunning coin that fits your budget. The Morgan series is the best opportunity to own a spectacular coin for a completely reasonable price compared to any other series. Take advantage of that. What is stunning to one person may not be to another. I consider my avatar coin stunning but others may not. Again just one of the great parts about Morgans, the options are endless. I would say if you venture into PL/DMPL (which I think is a great idea because they will always be in demand IMO) try to stick with ones that show some cameo. I've owned 10 or so PL or DMPL morgans and the ones without cameo are the ones that I tire of quick and the ones with nice cameo I can never get tired of.
