I just found a 1990 $50 star note about an hour ago. It is VF-EF, possibly AU. No creases or folds, slight bumped corners, a few wrinkles, overall a very nice circulated note. I realize a picture would be key, but I don't own the note. It has some ink bleed through going on at the top of the bill, exactly like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/50-FEDERAL-RESERVE-NOTE-1990-B67020388B-ERROR-OVERPRNT-/250437559629?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a4f3de54d The serial is B06242312* What do you think the REAL WORLD value is on this, if I bought it how much could I sell it for on eBay or even better on here if someone was interested, assuming VF-AU condition. Thanks in advance John
As you know, we would really need to see pics of the note you are speaking about to gauge value per individual responses here, especially since you don't seem to know the value yourself and can only roughly estimate the grade of what sounds like a circulated note. Condition is everything when it comes to value or what a collector may chose to pay and you seem to have knocked this one down enough notches that unless there is something special about the SN or it's a true error (which it is not), then its not worth much more than face in this condition. Asking how much someone on CT is going to pay for it if you listed it here totally defeats the purpose, especially since most of the serious paper collectors on here are probably going to glance at this thread and given the notations of its condition, pass on it. Also, the note you linked to is not a true error. That's just offset ink from another note that wasn't fully dry before getting pressed on the face of the note in the auction. Also, notice that that note has a serious center fold and I would never bid on that note without being able to see all the corners and both sides of the note. It's not worth $220, it's worth spending for $50. The seller is jiving the ebay community and/or is clueless and hoping for someone equally clueless to stumble upon this and part with a lot of cash for a nothing note. The note books (over) priced at $85 in ChCU with 232 million printed! There's no premium and it's not an error in regards to the note you linked to. Sorry.
I appreciate your honesty, that is exactly what I wanted. It was probably AU, but I saw that it wasn't a short run star and I was iffy on the error myself. I also agree that the eBay auction is ridiculously inflated and will never probably sell for that much, I was just using it for reference. The bill I saw was much nicer that the one in the auction, but still it was AU at very best. Knowing that is not a real error, I am obviously going to pass on it since it's probably worth about $60 on a good day. I was hoping I had a slam dunk with the star and an error lol Thanks again John
My dad did recently find a true error for me though. 2006 series $1 with no serials or seal, he will be here this Sunday I can't wait. I'll post up pics shortly after I get it. I'm hoping it's nice condition, cross your fingers for me
Great! Post the one you get from your father when you have pics ready. And keep looking for errors, they have to be out there waiting to be found. :thumb:
your note is probably worth $65-70. in CH CU it books for $100. the printing bleed through is actually quite common on the 80's and 90's $50 notes. the person selling the note on Ebay obviously doesnt know much about currency. i have a few $50's just like that. nice find though :thumb: here is an example of what i speak of on the 80's and 90's $50's(mine isnt as dark as the seller on ebay but you get the point)
so do star notes really only start to add "considerable" value when they are short runs? Thanks for that example, the bill I "have" is quite a bit nicer than that one. What would you grade the above bill? Sorry, not trying to beat a dead horse.
Again, condition of the note (grade) will be a huge determiner in its value, but in general, shorter printages can lead to greater rarity since so few notes would be known, let alone those that escaped circulation or destruction and remained ChCU or graded and put in plastic.
