What you have there is a bronze or copper follis of Justinian I.483-565 AD,became emperor in 527 AD.The letters on the front are DNIVSTINI ANVSPP AVC.The large M on the reverse is the denomination (40 nummi) and the year it was minted ANNO XII is the year 12th..538-9 AD? The NIKO is the mintmark (Nicodemia) and the little AV mark is the officina (workshop within the mint)
Here's a cool site, run your mouse over the coin! Same year as yours but different mint.

Here is a similar coin from XX.
as far as value,it's very difficult to say.I've seen examples that are in very bad shape going for $20 and very nice strikes like yours for over $100.
the coin in this picture, for instance, has a reserve bid of $125 but I doubt it will go that high.In my opinion, yours is just as nice.

This coin is from the Byzantine Empire, which had a very similar constitutional arrangement as the Roman Empire, which fell in 476
AD,but the culture & language of the Byzantine Empire was Greek as opposed to Latin,& Christian symbolism became an extremely inportant feature of Byzantine coinage.
